Canada is a pretty cool country with a remarkable immigration policy, so it pretty easy to see why ‘The World Needs More Canada’, which was the name of our first Humanities project this year. In this project we set out to answer the driving question, “Why does the World need more Canada?” It was not only a great learning opportunity but allowed me to gain a deeper insight into my own family’s immigration journey to Canada.
Lets Dig Deeper
What are we Doing First?
The project began with the class brainstorming what a Canadian identity is, especially from a global perspective. This led into an exploration of Canada relative of a global view. We reviewed current events by following “The Nationals” on CBC television watching this news broadcast daily, taking notes, and discussing our experiences with the class. This lead up to Thinking Thursdays, which were conferences in small, collaborative groups. The group Leader decided on the topic to discuss and would guide the conversation through prompting questions. When I was the Leader, I chose to discuss a broad overview of immigration in Canada. It appeared like my session went quite well as the group was engaged in the conversation and I received positive feedback during the Peer Critique stage.

It’s all About the Writing
We continued to explore Canada’s place in the world by studying international conflicts and diversity, eventually starting on an essay that would answer our central question: Why does the world need more Canada? In crafting my essay, I went through several drafts, refining it with feedback from peers. After some peer critiques, I transformed my essay into a podcast script. To make it engaging, we reviewed what makes a great podcast: it needs a captivating story structure, an authentic voice, and clear organization. I structured my podcast using the three-act structure, which helped to keep it compelling and focused.

Overall, writing the script felt natural for me since I’m used to creating and organizing stories. However, if I were to do it again, I would aim to write in a more cohesive way—I felt that my ideas could be better connected to create a smoother flow.
The recording process went very smoothly, requiring only a couple of re-takes. I was really pleased with how it turned out and felt confident in the final product. Next time, I would record the podcast in sections rather than all in one take, as breaking it into parts could allow for even more control and precision in each section.
My Final Thoughts
This project allowed me to explore the theme of Canada’s unique identity and how it resonates on a global scale. I also gained a better understanding of my own family’s immigration story and the opportunities Canada offers to people around the world. Not only did I learn about Canada’s contributions to the world, but I also practiced skills in leadership, collaboration, research, and storytelling. Ultimately, this project has shown me why Canada’s values, diversity, and openness matter now more than ever.
Thank you for reading, and as always have a great day.
