Pathways, spring exhibition. Our driving question for this exhibition was how does advertising persuade, sell, and influence society? I created an ad, to advertise Clarks Restaurant in Washington. My classmates and I went down to Oregon on a field study and learned more about advertisement.
How does advertising persuade, sell, and influence society? Advertising persuades, sells, and influences society by using persuasive language, likeable images, and emotional appeals to convince people to buy products or gain certain ideas. Through advertising, companies can change your view on how you see the product, trust in their brand, and how it can influence the rules, laws and values.
When creating my ad I learned more about advertisement because of how much each tiny thing can effect the overall product. From the font to the photos, it makes a big impact of how people can view what you are advertising. Since Clarks has a vintage vibe, I wanted to add that to my ad, but I didn’t know how. I looked through the photos I took from being there and found their old vintage billboard/ sign that says what time they open and close etc. Also instead of using their actual logo which is a wagon wheel, I decided to use a photo of an actual older wagon wheel to give you the feeling of the environment.
During the exhibition I found it hard to talk to people because of how loud it was, and it was hard for me to hear their questions. Many people didn’t really come and talk too, it was mostly just a quick glance at my ad and maybe ask a question or two. Only a couple people played our game too. To make it more obvious that we had a game, my group and I could have made a bigger sign for the game and name it. Whoever did come up to my booth they were very engaged and asked questions that were engaging for me too. The food was a big hit along with the set up. I think incorporating the checkered pattern into our set up was a good idea since there was a lot of checkered things at Clarks.
I didn’t just show off my ad, I also had a launch journal. In my journal it showed the progress of my work for my ad. My most popular page was all of my drafts in one slide showing my first all the way to my last draft. Also I would say a comparison between my first and last draft was another popular page in my launch journal. I think the people liked those pages because it showed how I stated to understand how ads work and how far I have come.
Overall when looking back at my ad and learning more about pathos, ethos, and logos, I think my ad represents pathos. There is not any logic, or credibility, but there is an appeal to what I’m adding and giving you emotions. The emotions such as interested, happy, and feeling hungry. I enjoyed going through the process of going to Oregon just to learn about ads and learning about a place there. I liked learning about a place there because here where I live, I’m more familiar with it, and it won’t give the same experience. The exhibition was fun and was cool to see how others interpreted what we were learning.
