A field trip to Alberta with my classmates we went. Driving through the twisted roads that laid ahead. The scenic views, my face said it all with it being amused. The bright colourful lakes that looked so fake. The bright sun climbing the mountains in the morning dew. Hiking for hours through the trees where the wind blew. The views were worth it all. Going on this trip to learn about the cultural ways of the West. I learned about the way they created their lifestyle to this day. The location, and position they faced when building the towns and settlements along the CPR. Read about my book I created, which talks about it all.
Our first grade 9 PLP project was Rocky Mountain High. My classmates and I went on a field study all the way to western Alberta and eastern B.C. We went to Banff, Golden, Revelstoke, Jasper, and a couple other places. I had to create my own thesis which I then answered with questions from the people I interview for my investigative video. Throughout my book, it answers the driving question; how does the geography of the west shape who we are?
Five Themes Of Geography:
While on the trip in Alberta, I had to find photos that represent the 5 themes of geography. Human environment interaction, location, region, movement and place. All these things explain what geography is. Geography isn’t just the land around us, it’s also the cultures all around the world and how people live. When creating this I think I did well with making the photos relate and making the poster interesting to look at. On the trip I didn’t quite understand the themes, so before we left I could have gotten a full understanding. So when remembering I needed to take my photos I didn’t just rely on it hopefully being right.
When on this trip I learned so much about the culture in Alberta!
I noticed and observed how most of the people who work at the main tourist places/ the places my class and I visited, they moved here from Australia, or Vancouver, or the UK, all around the world! That all has an impact on how the different cultures come together and learn from the ways each other and how people surround by them live. When at the Golden Skybridge obstacle course, the worker was from the UK and she said that she moved here a couple years ago. She was younger like in her 20s. I also noticed a lot of the people who moved here for work were younger, or as an example Mark, from the Rogers Pass Centre, he said he moved to there a decade or so ago and just stayed and adjusted to the weather. Since he was from Vancouver he wasn’t use to the snow, but now he says he always goes cross country skiing and on hikes everyday.
Next time when working on my book I could have managed my time better. At the end of the day I would fill out the pages I needed to do at the beginning of the trip. But near the end I didn’t do that and just made short bullet points. At many places we stopped and I created many notes which I am proud of. When I got home from the trip I still left my book to the last minute. Not really the information part, more of me having to make it appealing. Which i am very proud for doing the actual hard work first and getting it over with.
