Imagine bringing your kid, or going to work with your parent for a day, doing their work, learning about what life is outside of school, that’s what I did for take your kid to work day.
For take your kid to work day I went with my dad to his custom finishing shop. What he does is he first preps the cabinet or doors, anything along those lines that customers bring in. Then he sands the door as an example. He paints or stains the door, and then adds a finish and top coat.
I worked in the office first. I was taught about the money and reminding people to pay. I did invoicing and worked with cheques. I found when working in the office it was really repetitive and was mostly math. I used a calculator to get how much paint they used to know how much it will cost.
I also worked in the shop sanding. I used a sanding block first and then once I did the best I could to get the top coat off, I finished with a pneumatic sander. I did that with the doors of the cabinets, which I found hurt my hands and got boring overtime.
To show what I was doing I created a video showcasing the work I did throughout my day. In this video I used different angles to film and explained what the items were in the video. I also did an interview with my dad asking questions about his job, which I put for the sound and have the videos of me working overtop. I used the skills I learned in Maker to create my video. I tried my best to find different angles when filming. My video did go over on how long it was supposed to be, which was two minutes, I think mine was about twenty seconds over. Next time I could definitely work with staying in the time limit.
Here’s My Video:
Overall I found this a fun day, but after working at doing the same thing over and over again was repetitive. I did find I improved each time, which was good. In the future I could see myself doing this as my first job, but I couldn’t see myself doing this for long term. Since I already now know how to work at this job, I think I could easily start there!
