Mechanical V.S. Membrane – The Different Types of Keyboards

Hello people!

This is my third blog post and I will be talking about the different types of keyboards!  I will be going over their pros and cons so I hope you enjoy!

Mechanical keyboards

Mechanical keyboards are often more expensive and customizable, they can come in louder or softer sounds, it depends on your taste.  However, like mentioned, they usually come in really expensive prices.  A decent custom mechanical keyboard usually costs about 200usd.  Not to mention the shipping, the shipping for keyboard parts usually take months to arrive, plus, if you live in a more remote country, it can potentially cost a third of your budget.

Pros

  • Usually has a nicer sound (preference)
  • Usually looks nicer (preference)
  • Has more customizability, you can change the sound and how it looks
  • Fun to build (preference)

Cons

  • Really expensive
  • Shipping time sucks (unless it’s from amazon)
  • Building it takes time and can be very boring

Don’t have a photo on standby because my keyboard hasn’t arrived.

Membrane keyboards

Membrane keyboards are often more cheaper and lighter, most membrane keyboards are made out of plastic.  They are also a lot more common compared to mechanical keyboards, this is because of their affordable price.  Not only that, they are also a lot more softer than mechanical keyboards even when typing at fast speeds.  Membrane keyboards also tend to be more resistant to water.

Pros

  • Really cheap
  • Easy to find
  • Softer than mechanical keyboards (preference)
  • More resistant to water

Cons

  • Feels cheap – made out of all plastic
  • Cannot customize at all
  • Can’t build one by yourself (preference)

To be honest, keyboards is just preference, some people like membrane keyboards, some people like mechanical keyboards.  I personally prefer mechanical keyboards of their customizability and how they sound.  For the next blog, I will be building my keyboard (hopefully).

Thanks for reading!

Parts of a Keyboard.

Hello people!

This is my second post on custom keyboards and I will be explaining what parts you need to  make your very own custom keyboard.  Lets get started!

Keyboards have different sound signatures, if it has a deep sound signature, it is commonly referred to as “thoccy,” if it has a higher sound signature it is commonly known as “clacky.”  I personally prefer more thoccier keyboards because I prefer a lower sound signature.

The first component you will need for a custom keyboard is a case.  The case is what holds the keyboard together, and without it, the keyboard will fall apart. The usual material for a case is acrylic, aluminum, plastic and polycarbonate.  The casing material can also change the sound signature of the keyboard.  There are different types of keyboard sizes varying from 100%, which had all the keys, to 60%, which no longer has the F key, number pad and arrow keys.  A good starting case is the Idobao 67 which has a 65% layout.

The PCB is basically the motherboard, it,  makes the keyboard work and allow you to type.  You connect the switches using a soldering iron to the PCB so that it can register the keystrokes.  Some PCBs come with extra functions such as hotswap and RGB.  Hotswap makes it so you do not have to solder the PCB and automatically connects to the switches.  RGB is the lighting underneath the keyboard.  I do not have a specific recommendation because most PCBs come with the case.

The plate is a piece of material that lies on top of the PCB and switches and helps hold them together.  Like the casing, the most common material uses acrylic, aluminum, plastic and polycarbonate.  You can create a custom keyboard without using a plate, but the switches won’t stay in place that well.  Like the PCB, I do not recommend any plates because they usually come with the case.

The next item you will need is keycaps.  Keycaps is the illustrated button that lies on top of the switch.  You can customize the keycaps to have different fonts or colors.  2 good keycap brands I suggest is GMK and Akko (no specific key cap set).

After getting those items, stabilizers are the item you need to have.  Stabilizers stop the bigger keys (space, enter, etc) from wobbling and falling off.  They do not necessarily need to be bought because they come with the casing, however, the stabilizers that come with the Idobao 67 is quite rattly so I would probably change it to Durock v2s.

The last item on the list is switches.  Switches are mechanisms under the key caps that actuate when being pressed down.  It connects to the PCB and makes the keyboard work.  The switches are the main source of the different sound signatures.

Most of these products can be find inside Amazon, KBD fans and Idobao.  Keep in mind, to make a custom keyboard be prepared to spend hundreds of dollars.

Thanks for reading my 2nd blog on keyboards!

The Deep Dark Hole of Custom Keyboards (And How I Fell into it)

Hello people!

Recently, I was assigned to make a series of blogs explaining a hobby that I have gotten into.

For the next couple of weeks, I will be talking about what custom keyboards are and why I like them.  You are probably wondering, custom keyboards, why?? I don’t know why, but I enjoy watching, listening to custom keyboards so be sure to stick around later to see how I progress.

The next post will probably be in about a week that explains what items need and how/where to buy them.  I will also be talking about how a keyboard works and what purposes it has.  When I finish that blog post, I will be constructing my own keyboard and will be telling you how to build one. These are some of the blogs I have planned with much more to come.

I hope you enjoy these blogs!

The Outsiders – learning about world view.

Hello people!

Driving question: How does the Outsiders impact out worldview?

Check out my group:

Charlie

Seth

Cameron

Keenan

Sydney

Today I will be discussing my latest project that we were doing for the past 6 weeks, the Outsiders.  It was a novel by S.E Hinton that showed the different lives and worldviews of different people.  To showcase our learning, we did two tableaux of an important scene, the first one being a recreation of the original (1960’s) and for the second one, it is a transposed version that we think it would look like in 2021.  I quite enjoyed the novel, it really exposed me to how different my life is compared to Ponyboy (main character).

The first thing we did was to read the book.  At first, I found this books a bit boring but eventually started liking it.  In summary, the book is about a character named Ponyboy.  He lives with his 2 brothers (his parents are dead) and is part of a group called the Greasers, a group of poor teens and hoods who cause trouble around town.  Greasers would probably The Greasers rival gang is the Socs, a group of rich teens who wear madras and drive around in mustangs.  Nowadays, I think Socs would be the rich spoilt kids with blazers and polo shirts. The story starts with Ponyboy meeting with his friends (Johnny and Dally) and going to a drive in theatre.  If they lived in our time, they would have most likely not visited a movie theatre due to Covid-19.  They meet 2 girl Socs and start talking to them.  They walk both of them home but gets stopped by the girl’s boyfriends.  They manage to escape from them and return home at 3 am.  His older brother gets really mad and slaps him causing him to run away with Johnny.  If this was set in 2021 he probably would have been They decide that it isn’t smart to run away and decide to go back and cut through the park.  The girls boyfriends ambush them on their way there which forces Johnny to kill one of them.  They go on the run and meet up with a Dally who tells them to go to an abandoned church in the country side.  They take the train and manage to make it there.  After a couple of days, Darry comes by and visits them.  He treats them lunch to lunch and go back to the church.  However, when they arrive, they find it on fire with bystanders outside.  They ask what was going on and find out that they were on a field trip and there is multiple children inside.  Without hesitation, they jump into the church and save all the children.  While escaping, Johnny gets hit on the back with wood making Dally save him.  Dally manages to save him but is injured.  When they arrive to the hospital they are hailed as heroes for saving those children.  However, Johnny is gravely injured and if he survives, he will be paralyzed.  After Ponyboy leaves, he meets up with his brothers and learns that there will be a big rumble against the Socs.  While wandering about, he finds Randy, one of the Socs that jumped him in the fountain.  He says that he wishes this never happened and apologizes to him.  After that, the group of Greasers meet up with the Socs and starts the rumble.  People in 2021 cannot have big rumbles because of Covid, I think they would just argue online.  During the rumble, Dally sneaks out of the hospital to join the rumble and manages to help drive the Socs out with the help of all of them.  He tells Ponyboy that Johnny is about to die and that they need to visit him.  They make it to the hospital just in time and watch Johnny perish.  Through modern day technology, he may have not died because of our medical advancements.  Dally is devasted and runs of while Ponyboy goes in a trance and walks around for hours.  Eventually his other gang members find him and he tells them about Johnny’s death.  They all grieve and reminisce on old times.  Soon later, they get a call from Dally that he has robbed a store out of rage and now is on the run.  They agree to meet up at the parking lot so that they can help him escape.  As they arrive, they see Dally running from the cops but sees one of the cops takes out his gun and shoots him.  In this day and age, instead of Dally getting shot, he would have most likely been tazed and detained.  In 1 night they lost 2 of their close friends, 1 as a hero, 1 as a criminal.  At the end, they have a trial on whether or not Ponyboy is guilty and if he is, he will be taken away from his brothers.  He is found not guilty.  This is a summary of The Outsiders.

Moving on, what is world view?

World view is how you perceive the world through past experiences.  If you were a homeless person then you would probably have a spiteful world view.  The worldview 7 elements are economy, geography, values, society, beliefs, time and knowledge.

After finishing the book and learning what world view is, we started planning on how we were gonna do our final project, a tableau that we would be presenting inside our winter exhibition.  The first step we took was recreating a trailer for The Outsiders.  I was put in a group with Charlie, Sydney, Keenan, Seth and Cameron.  We started by assigning roles and getting costume.  I was a Soc and had to wear a fancy sweater.  The software we chose was iMovie a video editing software provided by apple and used the adrenalin filter.  While creating it, we had some difficulties with some people forgetting the costume.  Here it is:

When we finished creating the video, we moved onto creating a poster for our tableau.  At first, we created separate individual posters so that we could see each others ideas.  I decided to split the photo in half to show of the difference of the Socs and Greasers life.  On one side it had Ponyboy in his brick home while Randy is in his penthouse suite.  You can view the poster at the top of the Blog.  We decided to go with Charlie’s poster, it was very similar to mine but it looked slightly better.   Below me is the poster:

Finally, we started working on our tableau.  We had to create 2 tableaux, the first one being a recreation of the scene and the second one is  transposed to what we would think this scene would look like in 2021.  The scene we got assigned was when Ponyboy being slapped by Darry.  We decided that instead of Darry slapping Ponyboy, he takes away his phone because in 2021 that is a form of punishment.  After that, we assigned our roles, Keenan and I were the house, Sydney was a bush, Seth as Sodapop, Cameron as Darry and Charlie as Ponyboy.   Then we started decorating our stage to make it look more like a house.  Here is a time lapse of us putting up the props:

When we finished putting up our stuff, we started rehearsing our tableaux.  We start the tableaux by introducing the scene and talking about the 2 different scenes and what there world view traits are.  We believed that this scene portrays 2 worldview aspects, geography and economy.  If Darry wasn’t stressed about his financial situation he may have been nicer to Ponyboy.  They also live in a really rough neighborhood and house.  Here is a recording of us performing:

To answer the driving question, the main world view elements that are portrayed inside The Outsiders is economy, the reason why Socs and Greasers are divided, society, like economy, the Greasers are in the lower class while the Socs are in the high class, and values, the Greasers value everything they have but the Socs are spoilt and are more selfish.

In conclusion for this project, I found it was fun and unique.  It was cool learning what different drama techniques such as tableaux.  I think our performance for our tableau went pretty well, we clearly explained our scene and performed well.  For the performance, I think we could have added more props because our background was pretty plain.

Thanks for reading!

Learning to take photos (Herzog)

Hello people!

Driving question: Is it important to use technology to further improve our ability to communicate and to think creatively?

In this blog post, I will be talking about how I learned different techniques to take photos.  We were split into 2 groups, Carr and Herzog.  I recently finished my Carr blog post and if you want to check it out, click here.  After finishing Carr (the first part), we moved on and now I am in Herzog, our new project!  I found that this course was pretty interesting and I learnt a lot from ranging from using the lines provided by the camera to using different filters.

The app we mainly used was the camera app provided by Apple (sometimes we used photo booth) .  It came with a bunch of features that helped improve our photo taking.   Some techniques were learned to use was birds eye, taking photos from really high up, worms eye, taking photos from a really short point of view, long shot, taking photos from really far away and close up, taking photos from really close up.  Click here if you want to learn it as well.  To help enhance the photos,  we used Snapseed and Pixelmator photo because it has many cool filters and tools.    Some tools that these powerful apps was the healing tool, it allowed you to remove things that you don’t want into the photo, to changing certain colours on photos.

The first skill we learnt was to create photos that personify a certain object.  I chose to use a soap dispenser because I thought it would be quite creative to use it.  I made it so that the mouth was the hole that the soap comes out from and drew in the eyes.  I think I did a pretty accomplished job in creating it.  Here it is below:

The second skill we learnt was to take a picture that tells a story.  We were assigned to recreate and old photo that was as accurate as possible.  I chose a photo of me reading a book while sitting on a sofa.  I chose this photo because I had a similar shirt to the one in it.  Personally, I think I did quite well recreating the photo.  Here it is:

After that, we learnt how to use different features and how to use Snapseed and Pixelmator.  When we finished, I was tasked to create a photo that conveys an emotion that I am given.  I received the word zany, it means to be peculiar or unique in your own way.  I decided to dress up in a really odd outfit and added some cool features that I learnt to use.  This is a photo of it:

Then next thing I had to do was we created collages that showed of who we are.  The first thing I did was to create my name out of random objects that I found around.  We also created a page on it so if you want to check it out, click HERE.  Some things that I put in that was piano, gaming and seals.  I also created a collage that I don’t like.  Some things I put in there was Fortnite and prawns.  Look down below to check out my 2 collages:

The last thing we learnt to do was to create a gif that conveys an emotion and tells a story.  We learnt how to do this on an app called Keynote that has many cool functions that allows me to create gif’s.  The word I chose was melancholy which means to be depressed or really sad.  How did I choose this word?  I went on a random adjective generator and was chosen this word.  I used a black and white filter to make it look more sad and added a cloud raining on me.  Below me is my gif.

In conclusion for this project, I think that I have an extending/ proficient understanding of this topic.  To answer the driving question, without technology, a lot of things would be restricted, like you wouldn’t be able to take photos.  We can also use creative media to convey emotion by using different colours and different perspectives.  If I created a photo that is black and white, then the photo is most likely conveying a sad emotion.  One thing I think I did well was the task called manufacturing mood.  I used all the skills we learnt and managed to show my emotion.  Overall, if I could do something better, I would make sure to check the assignment because some times I forgot to write reflection that explains our media.

How does this relates to the adult world and how will it help me?

Some jobs require these skills – such as photography and cinematography.  This also builds on our competencies that we have been learning.

Learning to draw (Carr)

Hey people!

Today, for this blog post, I will be showing my journey through drawing.  A few weeks back, we got separated into two separate groups, one focusing on photography (Herzog), and the other one focusing on drawing (Carr).  I got picked to be in Carr, so I learnt many new techniques and secrets for my Apple Pencil and iPad.  It was really fun learning perspective and all sorts of things, and will probably use it whenever I draw.  After I finish this, I will be moving onto Herzog, so look out for a future blog post.  Without further ado, let me begin.

The main app we used was called Sketches Pro.  It was an app with many cool features ranging from pens to layers.  The first assignment we I had to do was to create my name using the wide variety of pens and to use pressure to create either a darker or lighter colour.  It was interesting experimenting on the pens, some were light and thin while others were more darker and thicker.  Personally, I really liked using a pen called the watercolour brush.  I liked how it was slightly transparent and was quite thick.  When I finished creating it, I used the marker pen as the outline, coloured the text in the water colour brush, and spray painted the outside.  I think the work I had created really showcased what I learnt while in Carr.  Here it is:

After completing that, we learnt how to sketch doodle.  Sketch doodling is basically creating a series of drawings and text instead of just note taking.  I think this skill is more useful because you can compress more info by using pictures and your not limited to only using text.  We watched a video Ted-Ed that shows us how to take proper sketch doodles.  While we watched, we were tasked to try to sketch doodle while watching the video.  I found it quite hard watching while doodling on my iPad because it was going at a rapid paise without giving us any time.  Eventually I completed the task and I think I did a good job.  In the future, if I am having a lecture in University, I can create a sketch doodle instead of writing it all out.

For the next assignment, we had to draw something that was 3D with shading included.  I decided to chose a cup because I find cups more simple and easier to create.  We learnt how to see the different shapes in complicated objects so that it would be easier to draw out.  In total, I drew out 17 different shapes ranging from circles to triangles.  After drawing the shapes, I added minor details and started shading it.  I used the water colour for the cup because it is semi transparent. For the shadow I used the marker because it was I felt that it looked nice with it instead of using the watercolour.

The next thing we did was learn how to use perspective.  We experimented by creating a 3D room with a person in it.  2 key terms that I learnt was the vanishing point, the point in the picture where the land disappears, and the horizon point, the line that separates the middle ground between the background.  When we finished the room we moved onto trying to create a landscape of somewhere you have been to.  I chose a national landmark in my old country (a mosque.)  I used all the skills that I learnt previously to create this drawing varying from shading  to using shapes to simplify the photo.  Overall, I feel like I did a very good job in recreating the photo.

For our final project in Carr, we had to create our very own logo for a business of our choice.  I chose to create a mattress company because my parents use to own a furniture company.  We also zoomed with a woman named Chloe Devine.  She is a graphic artist and alumni of Seycove that designs logos for clients.  She gave us some tips like to keep it simple and to start of with a mood board.  Due to time constrictions, we could not create a mood board but instead created a design brief.  I found that this assignment was much like the advertisement project we previously did.  I named my brand Sealser because my mattresses are as soft as seals.  My plan for the logo was to have a seal on top of springs with random accessories to signify that my mattresses had a lot of functions.  I also made it so it had a blue background because it looked kind of dull without it.  Here it is below:

In conclusion, I learnt many new techniques to create drawings.  Something I think did well was how didn’t give up when I was having a hard time.  One time when I was using Sketches Pro, it suddenly crashed and all my progress was deleted.  At first I was really annoyed and felt like giving up but I kept going.  One things I did not do as well was how my drawings are usually more messy.  My lines are usually not straight and I think I could improve in that aspect.

How this helps in the real world:

If I do not know how to draw, a lot of different jobs, such as architecture, will be restricted.  I also learnt how to sketch draw, which is really useful because they are more faster than just not taking.  I also know that colour can convey emotion, like if a painting is black and white it is most likely sad.

Outlast – My Scimatics Project.

Hello people!

For the past few weeks, we have been working on developing a board game based on probability. I found it quite fun doing this project so I hope you enjoy!

Check out my partner:

Luca

Driving question:

How are thematic and mathematical elements used in game design?

At the start, we learnt about what tectonic plates are.  In conclusion, tectonic plates are big slates are rock that sits on a rubbery liquid on top of the asthenosphere.  Due to being on a non solid material, the tectonic plates move around causing earthquakes, tsunamis and volcanoes.  In total, there are three different types of boundaries.  A divergent boundary, when a plate rips apart causing new oceanic crust to form, a convergent boundary, when 2 different plates ram into each other causing the denser one to sink under the less dense one, and finally the transform boundary, when 2 plates slide horizontally past each other.  To demonstrate what we learnt, we took online quizzes regularly to make sure we were learning.  Here is a mind map of what I have learnt through this project:

After building our knowledge on tectonic plates, we then attempted our first milestone.  We had to make brainstorm ideas to make some basic rules for the game.  My partner and and I decided to name our game Outlast.  When you start, you have to claim one continent.  Each one has their pros and cons.  After the continents are claimed, you start by rolling 1d6 and seeing how much damage it does to the other player.  If you roll a 1-2 you divide your population by 4, 3-4 divide your population by 2, 5 divide your population by 1.5 and if you roll a 6 nothing happens.  You can also get cards to sabotage the other player.  Here is my first attempt of rules for my game:

For the next milestone, we had to write 10 key science vocabulary words that would be based on our final game.  We wrote out key terms that we determined useful for our game.  We also decided to ditch our old rules and create a brand new game because we found that it was to complicated.  After we changed the rules, we made it so the new objective is to gain knowledge points.  When you roll a number with the 2d6 you use, the number you got will allocate to one of the science vocabulary that we wrote.

When we were making the board, we were trying to create a world map with all the continents and tectonic plates on it.   First, we drew out all the tectonic plates and labeled each one of them.  Unfortunately, we couldn’t decide how big to create the continents and with us running low on time, we decided to scrap that idea.

Soon later, we pieced together all the things we created to make one final version.  Like said before, we decided to ditch out old rules and completely change the rules of our game.  The new objective is to collect 100 knowledge points in order to win.  You can also die if you lose all of your knowledge points.  You also travel along the tectonic plates instead of staying on the continents and trying to survive.  The only thing we retained from our old game was the name of the game, Outlast.  We also used probability to make sure that it was easier to get volcanoes, tsunami and earthquakes by giving them a number with a higher chance of getting instead of the traditional method of if you roll a higher number, you will get something good.  At this part of the stage, we were already nearly done developing the board for our game.  My final game rules:

Finally, after putting everything together, we presented it to our peers and teachers.  We were allowed to wonder around playing and trying out different peoples games.  I really enjoyed playing Charlie’s and Silas’s game called humans vs aliens, I suggest checking out their blog.

In conclusion for this project, I think I did an okay job but could have done better.  Some things I think I did well was that I made sure to include at least 10 different terms I learnt over the course of this project and that I managed to create a decent game that was quite fun.  On the contrary, I feel like our board is kind of plain and could use some improvements.  Some things that we could have added was continents.  If I were to do this another time, I think I would probably change the rules a bit, like removing the knowledge points, and improve the board.  Here is my self assessment:

To answer the driving question, thematic and mathematic elements are heavily included to board games.  Most board games rely on mathematic probability, like rolling a dice to see how much you move, or drawing a good card out of a deck.  The thematic element is to make your board game visually appealing to the outside audience.

The end

Becoming a PLP learner

Hello people!

This is my second post for this week, however, it is not related at all with my advertising journey blog post.  For the past month or so, we have been focusing on a project called “Becoming a PLP Learner” in Maker.

Group members:

Keenan

Naomi

Kira

Hayden

Caden

Driving question:

How do I build and strengthen the PLP learning team?

Our big project for this subject was a keynote presentation that we had to present to all the parents of PLP 8.  I presented it about a week ago in the PLP rooms with all the different works that I had created over the past month.  I found it a cool experience presenting to all the teachers and I enjoyed doing it.

At the start of the project, I had to create a memoji using a laptop with a bunch of stickers on it.  I created it to give a representation of what I look like and what things I like.   It helped us learn a lot about Keynote from using instant alpha to making gradient backgrounds.

The first work I had was my 3 best Big Life Journal works.  The big life journal was not just a normal journal where we record our day to day lives in.  Instead, it is a book that showed the goals I want to accomplish, how to have a growth mindset and much more.  The 3 works I chose were the jar of awesomeness because it helped me realize what recent accomplishments and goals I have completed, the interest brain because it shows what types of interests I have and a letter to my younger self to describe a bit about my background.

Another work I displayed was my teamwork contract because it shows how I, as a learner, interact with other people.  I created a 1 minute video as my creative media explaining some of my strengths and stretches.  If you want to check out the video, it is a page in my learning portfolio that I have linked below.

To display how I am as a person, I created a boat.  It basically represents how I sail through challenges and I can navigate through tough seas.  I also created a mini-figure inside using tin foil that shows that “I am a light in a dark sea.” In other words, I am optimistic in rough times.  I  had limited resources when creating this boat so it was challenging but I think it turned out quite well at the end.

The 2 things that I wanted to add was a fish that had a bunch of “I am” statements and the teamwork challenges that we did.  The “I am” statements explains what I am like as a person.  Some terms I used was seal lover, 153 months old and gamer.  The other one one that I chose was a slide on my team work challenges.  In school, we did these teamwork challenges in groups that made us have to work together to come up with different creations.  Some of the challenges were to create a spaghetti tower, a paper tower, a tin foil boat and a mini game.  If you want to check out my keynote presentation, I have created a video explaining all the works I have created.

Finally, the last work I displayed was my user manual.  It showed how to use me (Chris 1.2) with a guide to all my different functions and how to operate me.  During the process of making it, the teachers made me us follow their exact formatting.  We explored the different function with pages where we learnt many new things like paragraph styles.  It really helped me format the User Manual because the teachers were using one of the styles.

How this relates/helps us in the real world:

This project helped us build our teamwork and made us learn more about ourselves.  It also made me more proficient in different apps and tools that I might use in the future.  However, some of my weaknesses is getting distracted and sometimes not being inclusive of people.

In conclusion, I found that this project was a really interesting and fun challenge.  We overcame some hardships and I am really proud of what I have done.  Some of my strengths I had in this project was being confident when presenting my work to other people.  During the exhibition, I did not feel nervous when I talking to the parents. Some things I could have improved on was making my presentation more colourful.  It was quite bland because I mostly used the colour black and white.  Finally, to answer the driving question, I bring positivity and I am a person who always supports his team members and friends.  I can also provide good and in depth ideas.

The end.

My advertising journey.

Hello people!

In the past few weeks, I have been working on a project called “medium is the message”!  It has been a fun and interesting journey going through this project.  While doing this project, we did many mini milestones and one big project (our advertisment).

Our final group ad.

The driving question:

How does what we hear, see and read influence us?

My first creative media:

  • This was my first draft that I created. It took me approximately 1 day to create.
  1. First draft.
  2. CD7292E8-091A-4C6E-8964-35B3F2D28DE4
  3. 3rd draft
  4. Final draft

The big project was to create an ad for a randomly assigned company.  My group and I, was assigned to a company called “honey doughnuts”.  As you can see above, those were my different drafts I made for our company.  When you continue to go through the different drafts, you can progressively watch as the improvements of the ad.  In total, I created 4 different drafts.

The first thing that me and my group did, was to contact the owner of Honey’s doughnuts to ask her preferences for the ad.  After interviewing her, I created my first draft.  The first ad I created had a simple background consisting of yellow, brown and black with the doughnut having a bad transparent background.  I also drew my own bees using an app called Procreate.  When I did the second draft I changed the background colour because I found that the black and brown did not really fit with the aesthetic.  Also, instead of using instant alpha that keynote has installed, I used the transparent tool that Canva provides so that the donut’s background is fully transparent without any weird dots on the screen.  On my third draft,  I decided to remove the red circle behind the doughnut because it was diverting the attention of the reader.  While making the third draft, I made sure to add all of honeys doughnuts contact information and that the doughnuts had no preservatives,  fresh and was made with free ranged chicken eggs.  After getting critique from my teacher, I revised and tried again.  I finally created my final ad that I though was pretty good.  I changed the bees and shortened the text that the bee said.  After finishing my individual ad, my group and I proceeded to choose 1 ad out of all of us.  Unfortunately, my final ad did not get picked to be sent to Honey doughnuts.  After deciding what the final group ad was going to be, we got professional feedback from a real advertising company on the ad.   When we revised the ad after getting advice from Mr Hepburn (the owner of the advertising company) we sent it of to Honey’s doughnuts.   Unfortunately, she has not reached back to us.  In conclusion, I learnt many different advertising techniques and how I can create an ad if I needed to in the future.

My second creative media:

On top of this body of text is my advertising photo journal.  I had to travel to different places like down town so that I could take photos for this media.  I found it quite interesting going to different place while taking photos for this media because I do not usually pay attention to ads I drive by.  All in all, I found this project pretty cool.

My third creative media:

For my third creative media, I had to analyse an video advertisement made by apple.  This was our first real milestone for this project since joining PLP.  This ad was advertising a product called “the home pod.”  I had to talk about the different aspects of the video was like who the target audience for this media is for,  what the message they were trying to send and how they used that message to reach the target audience.  I really enjoyed watching the video and found it very intriguing.  If you want to watch the video, here it is below:

My fourth creative media:

Design Principles Workbook Medium is the Message view

Before, creating our individual ad, we were given a workbook of different advertisements techniques.  It also included areas to try the methods that they displayed.  It taught me many methods for the project.  These are some terms I learnt:
The first term I used was relationships.  It means making connections between colour, patterns, shapes and text.  I implemented this term into my individual ad by using colours that fill well with each other.  The next term I used was alignment.  It means that everything is evenly aligned and is spaced well.  I utilized the term by evenly aligning all my photos and text well.  After that, I used another term called proximity.  Proximity means to make your ad easily interpreted.  I think the ad I created is easily distinguishable and can instantly tell that I was advertising a bakery because I had a big photo of the donut in the middle.  The last term I used was contrast.  Like relationships, it means to use nice colours that fit together.  I used a nice bright yellow to represent honey and white to contrast it.

In conclusion for this project, I learnt many new terms and how to create a proper ad.  I found it very fun and would enjoy to do it again.  Some things I think I did well was creating my final ad.  I made sure to include all of the requests made from the Honey Doughnuts owner like that the doughnuts were fresh and had no preservatives. The colours I picked out also fit well with the aesthetic.  I also added a honey comb background on top of the yellow so that it was not to empty.  Some things that did not go so well was the interview with Ashifa (owner of honey doughnuts). My iPad kept on disconnecting during the call when I was talking because of some weird tech issue.  I was quite embarrassed to miss most of the interview and apologized to the honey doughnuts owner through the chat.

What I took away from this project:  I now know different techniques used for advertising and how to create an ad in the future if I ever need to.  If I every do it again in the future, I think I will probably use the same idea as I did for this ad but ad more doughnuts to show the wide variety of flavours that Honey Doughnuts has.  I now know that what you hear read or see can really influence our choice of decision.  Subconsciously, if you see something that looks aesthetically pleasing or eye catching, you are more likely to notice and might subconsciously remember it.  This makes it really important when making ads because you are trying to sell something.

Unfortunately, this is the end of the blog post.  I really enjoyed creating it and hope you enjoyed reading this blog!
