TPOL

Hello and welcome back to my blog. Today I’ll be reflecting on my 2023/24 school year and the challenges and triumphs it has brought on.

Declaration of learning:

“Thank you for coming to my presentation of learning. I am the expert on my own learning. I am also responsible and accountable for my own learning. You can expect me to give an honest evaluation of my progress. We will discuss my strengths and opportunities for growth. Thank you in advance for listening and for offering feedback that I can use to improve as a learner.”

This reflection is centred around success behaviours, specifically agency, engagement, and self-regulation.

Agency

This year, I feel as though I was able to fully understand and utilize this success behaviour.

Outside of my final products, this is demonstrated through conversations with teachers about grades and improvements, specifically in BCFP.

My learning plans shows specific goals set for this school year:

A goal I wanted to focus on was handing things in on time, which I almost exclusively did this year.

My resilience was shown specifically through my Manhattan Project project, where I was faced with a particularly difficult group, but had to work to come to a solution.

I also showed resilience in my development of my Zettlekasten throughout Fear Factor. I was able to apply the ideas of a Zettlekasten into my BCFP work, and I had a multi-area tool.

I was able to successfully accept and implement feedback into my work this year. This can be seen through my spoken language work in the Great Debaters and the Barry Sullivan Law Cup.

Self-regulation

I was able to stay extremely focused on my work and appropriately manage priorities this year. This year I had four seasons of sports, 12 hours of my job every week, and was managing school on top of that. This ultimately came at the cost of a vibrant social life this year but I am confident that I had excellent priorities.

By prioritizing homework and staying motivated by the thought of post-secondary, I was successful in my balance of school/work/sports/life.

Organizational tools like Things and Calendar were helpful in prioritizing my workload, which were apps I was continuing with from my grade 10 organizational revolution.

While our group ultimately found a solution in the Manhattan project, I can say it was my most stressful project this year, and we definitely could’ve avoided some stress through more communication with teachers.

In my final BCFP and Humanities exhibition project, I was able to appropriately time manage and have a solid timeline, allowing me to leave for 3 days right before the exhibition while still avoiding major stress.

Engagement

This year I have felt far more engaged with my learning, probably due to the more pathways available to us, and the fact I was consistently striving for extending in my work.

In fear factor, I was able to complete a successful video essay on the topic of counterculture, which I learned a ton about for the purposes of that project.

I truly feel as though I showed growth and engagement through my final BCFP project, which was displayed at the exhibition. Not only was I able to engage in my learning, I was successful at getting audiences of all ages to engage in my work.

An area of development to focus on next year is speaking more in class discussions. I gradually gained confidence in our Socratic seminars through Who Cares and Why Bother and Fear Factor, but my contributions to casual class discussions were lacking depth and consistency.

I felt I was particularly helpful to some of my peers this year, as I had a solid group to ask for feedback, and vice versa.

I published reflections for each project on my learning portfolio this year. Although they were consistent, I could’ve gone deeper into my learnings for each project.

Conclusion

Overall, this year has been a great success for me. I was able to extend beyond what I thought I was capable of. I was very extremely motivated and excited about my learning- the thought of university applications scared me into becoming a motivated and productive student and it worked out well in my favour!

I hope to carry my learning habits and behaviours through into next year, as well as working on my engagement, group work, and writing.
