My name is Cole Webb. I’m gonna talk about three main projects and my understanding and learning about them. I picked these three main behaviours for each project
For agency, I picked accepting feedback.
For preparation, I picked at school learning.
For Self regulation, I picked focussing in class.
My first project was Destination Imagination, where we had to build a mechanical arm made of wood to launch a beanbag a certain distance. If we made it too big, we’d be disqualified, so it took us a while to plan and think through it to get it perfect. The square was about 50 cm. We took this project to two competitions. I could not make the first one, but I attended the second. We won the first one, and in the second one, we came second. My role was building the arm. I came up with the idea, but we had other ideas too, so we combined them to make it bigger and better. I accepted feedback from my peers on mistakes I made, and I also gave them feedback to help them improve.
In terms of preparation, this project was challenging. It took us a while to gather all the materials, and I was usually tasked with bringing them in. However, I didn’t bring them in because I was either too lazy to find them, didn’t have time, or was playing video games. This affected the project because on the days I wasn’t there, they didn’t have the necessary materials and had to improvise.
What I did well for this project was helping out my group and ensuring the build was perfect. In terms of self-regulation, it was challenging to focus with all the tools around. I found myself making random things, goofing around, and playing games on my iPad instead of helping my group.
Overall, I learned that you need a lot of elastic bands and wood to make a catapult, and you have to measure the distance to see how far it goes. Working with my group, I realized there are some things I need to work on, like being on time, helping out when needed, and bringing materials in on time.
For my second project, I created a video game using my knowledge of science. The game’s purpose was to teach players about atoms and elements. The game was similar to the Chrome Dino runner game, but instead of running, the player controlled a particle to collect protons for points. I worked on this project alone and was proud to submit it first. My teacher really liked it, and I believe it was successful because I am genuinely interested in this subject. I am open to feedback, and Miss Kadi suggested using protons as coins and incorporating elements as obstacles, which greatly improved the game. This project earned me one of my best grades, and I am proud of the result. As for preparation, I did not require much outside of my iPad, which allowed me to stay focused without distractions. Overall, I believe I did well and would be excited to work on a similar project again.
My third project was understanding language and how it ties into adventure in this project we went to Oregon state and a bunch of other places in Oregon and we had to do a bunch of mini projects and make a book with this book would put things we did to record it and then look back at it, it went really well and this was by far the best trip I’ve ever had being able to stay with my friends I had a lot of fun doing this, but there were some troubles like formatting my book and putting stuff in my book on the trip it was hard for me to do this on the trip because I was so excited at looking at the other stuff in terms of excepting feedback I got a lot of feedback. I didn’t really look at it. I didn’t really try to use that feedback to make my book better but I used some of it the reason why I didn’t use the feedback was I was being too excited and wanting to play balloons TD six with my friends in terms of preparation, I didn’t really work on it at home. because I was already finished it and I was happy with it in terms of self regulation it was OK, but it was kind of hard to control myself because I was away from my family and like it was like being free I had to get a lot of reminders to stay focused, but overall it went really well and I’d love to do it again.
Overall I loved the hands-on learning and the adventure and being able to enjoy nature go to places I’ve never been to before being able to spend time with my friends the best way that I learned was being out of class and being able to touch nature and see nature and being able to go to museums cheese, factories, marine biology centres and being able to see stuff so cool very excited about it because I love the stuff that I saw there and especially the marine biologist centre because being able to see a live octopus in a little container was so cool
In conclusion, my experiences with hands-on projects have taught me valuable lessons in teamwork, preparation, accepting feedback, and self-regulation. While I faced challenges along the way, I also achieved success and learned a lot about myself and my interests. I am grateful for the opportunities to explore new subjects, create innovative projects, and enjoy adventures with my peers. I look forward to continuing to learn and grow through hands-on experiences in the future.
