The Driving Question
In what ways have humans impacted the delicate ecosystems around us and how can we lessen our impact.
In this project, we learnt about ecosystems. We leant about how they are interconnected, and how effecting one thing, effects the others. We also learnt about bio-accumulation, and bio-magnification. We also learnt about the different wildlife practices that wildlife managers use to maintain healthy thriving ecosystems.
Three Keystones
The project was split into three keystones, each meant to display one one thing we learnt.
The first keystone was to create a food web. The criteria was that it had to be interactable. I decided to write a program that would simulate what would happen if you over-hunted one species. I thought I did pretty well on this, and I was most proud of my reflection on it. I could have took the time to more accurately calculate things, as looking back it wasn’t the most well put-together. I also could have spent more time on the visuals. Each of my drawings were done in under a minute, and with very little thought. Here is my program if you want to try it out for yourself: https://scratch.mit.edu/projects/638073255/
The second assignment wasn’t a keystone, but it was interesting and I feel like I should talk about it anyways. We had to animate a gif that showed either bio-magnification, or bio-acumilation. I chose bio-magnification, and I’m quite proud of how it turned out. I put a lot of effort into the animation, and payed attention to the small details. I’m happy with my grade, and I think it accurately represents the work I put in.
The second keystone was a news report about an example of wildlife management in our world. Our group picked the wolf cull in Yellowstone. I think me and my group did a pretty good job of showing the problem, the old solution, and our new solution in the span of the video. Our video was very chaotic though, and took the “loud and random“ theme a bit to far. In our revisions, we fixed this, and toned it down to a bearable level.
Our third and final keystone was to make a series social media posts, using a fake Instagram post tool. We were given five themes we had to cover, and each post was meant to talk about a certain issue of our choice. My partner for this assignment was Charlie . This assignment was a lot of fun, and I put a lot of effort into it. Each post was well thought out, and explained an issue we currently have in our world. Each post also had a solution to the problem, as well as a Hashtag people could join.
Conclusion
After all that, its time to answer the driving question.
Humans currently effect everything we touch and everywhere we go. I think that we should get better at educating the public on how they can cut down on there impact.
