Caesar had Seizures?! – A body biography on Julius Caesar

A Midwinter Day’s Project

Our advertising unit is over, and now it’s time to start something new: Shakespeare. Our first assignment for this unit was to make a paper representation of a main character from Shakespeare’s play Julius Caesar. We had to represent important things about the person only by using pictures, symbols, and colors, then present them to the class. Our group got assigned Julius Caesar (who in fact had seizures). We decided to Cut him out on yellow paper, because yellow is a common colour on Roman Game flags. We also dressed him in a classic Roman toga, focale, and a with a laurel wreath.

Our Amazing Caesar

Now just how do you make a Caesar?

To create our marvellous cutout, we traced one of our team members in a position we thought represented Julius’s personality. Next we drew on some detail like his hair and fingers. Then, we decided on an appropriate outfit to cut out and measured it a bit bigger than the body so it wouldn’t be too small. The hardest part was deciding on what things would best represent aspects of his personality, and having them all cut out in time. Here is a list of what every symbol represents:

Mouth: His ability as a public speaker

Lightbulb: His brilliance

Dagger: How he was assassinated

Lightning Bolt: His need for power

Heart: His family/close friends

Fist: His political career (he ruled with an iron fist)

Sword: His military career

Maps: Where he attacked/conquered

Feet: His footprint in history

Reflection

Before this project, all I knew about Julius Caesar is that he is a dictator from Rome who’s title is both in a salad and a the name of a smoothie place. After completing this project however, I now know that he was a father, a General, the high priest of Jupiter, and a guy who had seizures. I also learned that to work as a team, you can’t be too polite or nothing actually gets done. One thing I would have done differently if we were to do this project again was I would have made a plan on who does what as soon as we got assigned the project. I also would have been more careful when cutting and gluing because something’s were not aligned with the paper.
