A Shakespearean Experience

Roses are red, violets are blue, who knows how many poems, we can write about worldview? This was a common phrase to hear in the PLP 8 humanities class during our worldview/poetry unit. Due to the delay of the last part of our worldview unit in term one, we continued it throughout term two and the beginning of term three in the form of a mini poetry unit. As crazy as it may sound, worldview and poetry actually go pretty well together and our class was able to create a variety of unique poems. We then made our own poetry books with all of our poems in an app called Book Creator.

During our poetry unit, we did a lot more than just writing poems. One thing we did was study and learn important poetry terms and formats that would come in handy when writing our poems. We read poetry and worked on worksheets to help us get a feel for how types of poems were written as well. We also wrote group poems, which were my favourite, because we got to present them with actions to the class. From this unit, I feel I’ve learned a lot about how poetry is written (it is more the feeling that the words carry, instead of their literal meaning), as well as more terms and formats then I ever knew  existed.

One of my favourite poems we read

After I had all of my poems written, it was time to start working on my poetry book. The first thing I did was get all my poems into one place, then I started looking for images for my background. I was mainly looking for nature shots because they are simple, bright, and beautiful, and would put the focus on my poem. Next, I created my title page. I used the apps Canva and Photo editor to make it, as well as the website Flaming Text. Now it was time to get the format of my book ready: two pages next to each other with one image between them. Then, I started adding the poems. As I put them into the book, I did a final rereading and editing of them so that there wouldn’t be any mistakes. After that, I added a little note on the side of each poem on its inspiration and/or meaning, did a final read-over, and my book was ready to go.
