‘What role did the conflict of World War II play in shaping Canadian Identity?’ That was the driving question for this project. Last year in PLP 9 we learned about the conflicts in World War I and the role that Canada played in it. This year we moved on to the story of World War II, and focused on its effect on Canadian identity. To show our learning, we had to write a professionally formatted essay, then turn it into a magazine, which we then gave to the Lynn Valley Legion. We also raised $10 each to put money towards a flag that we also donated to the Juno Beach Center. Another part of this project was for us to do an act of service for the community which we recorded in some form of media, then wrote our about the author page on.
My essay was about the technological innovations from World War II, and how it impacted Canada’s post-war economy. This was my final essay.
I learned that writing a professionally formatted essay was much harder than I thought it would be. Especially when I had to use professional words in the essay so that it was more formal, and informational. Still, I gained a new skill that could come in handy for the future (specifically university).
After I wrote my essay, turning it into a magazine, or as we call it in PLP a Zine (pronounced Zeen) was easy. All I had to do was copy paste my essay into the formatting of the Zine, and add in my images.
I think that the hardest part of this project was the formatting. Making sure that the essay had correct formatting especially the works cited page, was incredibly difficult. Especially since the sources were in MLA formatting and had to be in alphabetical order.
Overall, I think that this project was difficult and tiring, but taught me helpful skills that I can use in the near future (post-secondary). Learning about the conflicts of World War II, and Canada’s impact on it (and vice versa) helped me feel a bit more of a connection to Canada. I think that the conflict of World War II played a pretty big role in Canadian Identity, and as my essay said, Canada’s economy would not be the way it is today without the innovations from World War II. Thank you for reading this blog post, and tune in for the next one!
