Why the world needs more Canada was our most recent project, unfortunately I missed most of it. For the past three weeks I was in Asia so I wasn’t as caught up as most people were which made it quite a struggle. As our first project of the year it was a lot getting used to getting back to a consistent work flow and making sure to keep track.
Now you may be wondering what was this project even about? At the beginning we really focused on learning about Canadian identity and finding out what is going on in our county. One of our first assignments was watching tv. Crazy right? Don’t worry it wasn’t normal TV, we were tasked to watch the national. The National is a Canadien news channel run by CBC. It goes over the most important things that are happening in Canada and around the world.
That was the basis of the introduction to one of the bigger parts of the project: Thinking Thursday Discussion. In the thinking Thursday discussions we had to choose a topic related to Canadien Identity. Every Thursday for a couple weeks there would be a small group of students who would present their findings and create a 20 minute discussion about this. Mine was about what affects the American election has on Canadien identity. I‘ve always been interested in politics and this was the biggest political thing going on at the time of my research. And as the US are our big scary neighbours I thought that this would be a good opportunity to talk about how the Canadien identity is affected by the US and how it could be changed more.
We also researched Canadien authors. We read many different stories and were told to investigate how identity was connected to these stories. They included some classics and some fairly new ones as well.
After that we were asked to collect all the information we had gathered to create a thesis which focused on our driving question: “why the world needs more Canada.” We had to find a topic that showed Canada’s positive impact in the world. We had to include some sources from some classic Canadian literature. Next using this thesis we had to write a multi paragraph composition. I decided to focus on how Canada has influenced the eco-tourism industry globally. I used the thesis: “Tourism on Canada’s natural beauty provides substantial economic, social, and environmental benefits to the country while serving as a model for sustainable tourism globally. This approach not only drives economic growth but also promotes conservation efforts and cultural preservation.” I think that my multi paragraph was my weakest link in this whole project. After I finished writing it I looked over it and realized that it didn’t really sound too much like me. I focused too much on what my sources were saying instead of what I actually wanted to talk about.
Our final part of the project was our podcasts. Right when we started to create them I left for a three week long trip, so my podcast wasn’t exactly the same as everyone else’s. But it did give me a chance to really make my script more personalized. I was able to pull parts of my script from what I was seeing while travelling in these different countries, which I think added a lot to my podcast and also made it more unique. I also got to interview my dad who is a very experienced tour guide so it gave a much more insightful part to my podcast.
Thank you so much for reading!
