Winter Exhibition Review

In PLP we have two large presentations or exhibitions of our work per year, one in the early winter and one in early summer. We have now completed our first exhibition, the winter one. The main topic of study last term was religion and worldview. I have already done a blog post on my worldview, to view it click “here”. As we were learning about the different religions, we went to visit some of their sites of worship. At each site we had to take photos of “how each religion represented their worldview in the real world” then we had to combine some of the photos in to a documentary.

For the winter exhibition each group was assigned one of the six most practiced religions. Then we had to make a poster showing how they represent their worldview in the real world through the following; appearance, architecture, artwork, clothing, food, holy text, music, language, leader, representation of deities, symbols and worship rituals.

My group consisted of Ryan, Malaika, Grace and Ally. Our religion we were assigned was Islam. My group decided that the five pillars of Islam would work to convey how they represent their worldview in the real world.

  • Draft 1

The five pillars of Islam are five laws and guidelines to live by, they were supposedly set by Allah (god). If you don’t live by all five then you are not a true Muslim. We had to make a sample of a traditional Islamic food and create an activity that represents Islam. The food we made was date squares; dates are traditional to the Islamic culture because they take a long time to expire in the heat of the desert. The activity we created was “write your name in Arabic”, we chose this because it is different from English in many ways: you write from right to left, all the letters are connected with lines and there are less letters in the Arabic alphabet than in the English alphabet.

Some of my favourite moments of the entire project was the fact that everyone was always happy to teach us about their religion and also was intrigued that we were learning about other religions as well.

I enjoyed and learnt a lot from my first PLP exhibition and the projects leading up to it.

My Worldview

In my Humanities class we have been learning on how different things can affect someone’s worldview. From that we had multiple homework projects to do, the final product was to make a video with an app called Explain Everything. In this post I will show you the video and all the homework assignments we did.

The first assignment was to measure our “grit” by taking a small quiz.

The second project was to use a second app called MindNode to make a mind map of some of the things that had influenced my worldview.

The third thing I had to do was make a script for the video.

Scripting My Worldview

I am Finn.

I have a broad worldview. Multiple things have helped influence that.

I have always been interested in space and how things work, when I was younger I read a

lot of books on space, that sparked my interest in science fiction.

Another thing that helped shape my worldview was the students from Chile, Brazil and Belgium that lived with us.

They exposed me to different languages, cultures, foods, and traditions.

The third experience that influenced my worldview was my trip to Mexico when I was 7.

I noticed there are different rules and standards compared to what I had previously experienced.

For example in Mexico you can ride in a car without seatbelts, in Canada seatbelts are mandatory.

At one point during our trip we took a taxi, and some of the seatbelts didn’t work.

My parents were uncomfortable with it because the laws are different in Canada.

We used city transit and I noticed the bus was old and the seats made of hard plastic – it was different from what I was used to.

The other main thing that has influenced my worldview is technology.

Technology has made it possible for me to find information on things I never knew existed.

You can find out how to make or do anything if you look hard enough, for example, I found out how to make solid rocket fuel out of easy to find items.

Technology also provides news via radio, tv and newspaper articles.

I often check the NASA website to find recent space news, for example on Nov 26, 2018 they landed a new Rover on Mars, Insight.

Thank you for watching this video on my worldview.

The end goal was to make a video talking about our worldview and what we had learnt through all the projects we did.

As an extension we had to make a blog post on how we did all that, and you have just finished reading that.

Everyday Objects

In my maker class we are learning about how to take good photos with our iPads. One of the tasks was to take pictures of everyday objects from different angles. Here is a slideshow of some of the photos I took.

The next task we did was to take a photo walk. A photo walk is when you take a camera on a walk an look for objects with similarities and take photos of them. I live next to a park, so I did it in there, at night. As before a slideshow of some of the photos I took.

The third task was to take a screenshot of editing a photo. This time it is only one photo I am showing.

The final project was to make a personified image. To make the personified image we had to take a photo of a everyday object. I came up with the idea for my image when my teacher make a joke of there being “wifi hamsters” in the sealing of our school. So that led into this…

Oregon Business Ad Reflection

In my humanities class we had to make ads for companies we visited on our trip to Oregon, the company my group had to make a business ad for, was Marine Discovery Tours.

Our group, which included Felix, Ciara, Rhiann, Grace and I, met with someone who worked for the company, we spoke with them about the business and making an ad for them. Here is a slideshow of ad drafts one to twelve.

  • Draft 1

In the process between draft one and draft five, I edited the font, changed the slogan, and changed and cropped the photo.

Oregon Field School Reflection

On October 13 2018 a group of twenty eight students and three teachers left Seycove Secondary at 6:15 am. They wouldn’t return for another seven days…

I was one of those students.

Here are my top five Oregon feild school moments.

5: Cabela’s
I think Cabela’s is world best store, it has everything you would need for exploring the great outdoors therefore the best store in the world!

4: R.O.V.s at Hatfield Marine Science Centre
Hatfield marine science center is an marine reasearch laboratory where we built and tested Remote Operating Vehicles (R.O.V.). We had to construct am R.O.V out of pre cut PVC pipe and connectors, three motors (right, left and up/down), a magnet and a remote controller. Once built we tested them in large tubs of water with steel balls and cutlery located on the bottom. The task was to successfully operator your R.O.V. To collect as many objects as possible. Our team appeared to be one of the more successful teams because we finished the task first. I really enjoyed this part of the trip because I was able to show some leadership in completing this task.

3: Fort Stevens State Park
Fort Stevens State Park is an old American civil war battery that was used in the first and second world wars. It was really cool to see Inside the battery and get told what everything was and it’s uses were. It is definitely a place I would revisit again because it is cool to see an old battery so well preserved.

2: Highlife Adventures
Highlife Adventures is a zip lining park with 9 zip lines, 7 of the zip lines go over water. I love zip lining and highs. There isn’t anything else to say about it other than Highlife Adventures is awesome and if you are ever in Warrenton, Oregon then it is a must do.

1: Beverly Beach
Beverly beach is a large open beach that is on the open Pacific Ocean, so the waves are large and the water is realy cold. We went there on the ~ day of the trip, our teachers said that we could walk in the water solong as we didn’t get wet…                                      After a while of running in a water with my friends a big wave came and partly soaked me. Another few minutes and I was fully soaked. I had fallen over in the water and fallen  again when I tried to get up because a large wave came and knocked me over. One of my friends Brenton had also falen over at some point. When we had to go the teachers decided on the six wettest people who got to go back to our cabins and change out of our wet clothes before we went to dinner. Even though the water was cold, it was really fun.

A book I made about the trip:
