For our unit on religion and worldview our question was: How is religious worldview represented in the real world? For this project we had groups, my group was Gabby, Emerson, Sam and me. We looked at how to identify what someone’s worldview is, what our world view is, some of the different religions, what their worldviews are and how the religion effects our worldviews?
The first thing we looked at was defining worldview. We looked at the seven different things that influence our worldview.
Then we made a video in Explain Everything about three things that effected our worldview.
We studied the religions in class. We learned that there are many different branches of some religions, for example Christianity has tons of different branches but the main two are Catholic and Protestant.
Here are a few facts about each religion we studied.
Christianity
They believe in one God but God has three parts:
God the Father, God the Son and The Holy Spirit
Christians worship in churches.
Their spiritual leaders are called priests or ministers.
The Christian holy book is the Bible and consists of the Old and New Testaments.
The most important Christian holy days are Easter and Christmas.
Judaism
Jews believe that there is only one God that they have a covenant with.
In exchange for all the good that God has done for the Jewish people, Jewish people keep God’s laws and try to bring holiness into every aspect of their lives.
The central and most important religious text for the Jews is the Torah.
Jewish traditional or oral law, the interpretation of the laws of the Torah, is called halakhah.
Spiritual leaders are called Rabbis.
Jews worship in Synagogues.
Islam
Muslims believe that there is only One God.
The Arabic word for God is Allah.
Muslims base their laws on their holy book the Qur’an and the Sunnah.
In the books there are five basic pillars of Islam
The pillars are: shahada there is no god but god, salat five prayers a day, sawm Ramadan fast, hajj pilgrimage to Mecca and zakat give at least 2.5% of income to poor.
Sikhism
Sikhism is a monotheistic religion.
Sikhism stresses the importance of doing good actions rather than merely carrying out rituals.
Sikhs believe that the way to lead a good life is to:
keep God in heart and mind at all times, live honestly and work hard, treat everyone equally, be generous to the less fortunate and serve others.
The Sikh place of worship is called a Gurdwara.
The Sikh scripture is the Guru Granth Sahib, a book that Sikhs consider a living Guru.
Buddhism
Buddhists seek to reach a state of nirvana, following the path of the Buddha, Siddhartha Gautama, who went on a quest for Enlightenment around the sixth century BC.
Buddhist don’t believe in a personal god.
Buddhists believe that nothing is fixed or permanent and that change is always possible. The path to Enlightenment is through the practice and development of morality, meditation and wisdom.
Buddhists believe that life is both endless and subject to impermanence, suffering and uncertainty. These states are called the tilakhana, or the three signs of existence.
Buddhists believe that you are reincarnated over and over again, experiencing suffering throughout many lives.
Buddhists can warship both at home or at a temple.
Hinduism
It is very hard to understand because it has no founder it has no common language, no common Didi, no common scripture and no common ritual
Most Hindus believe that we all have a soul and that soul is a reflection of god.
They believe that the soul is reincarnated over and over again.
The goal of Hinduism is to achieve liberalization from the cycle of reincarnation.
Since this is PLP we went on field studies to each religions place of warship. We went on three days. On the first day we went to a Muslim mosque, then a Jewish Synagogue. On the second day we went to a Hindu temple, a Buddhist temple and then a Sikh gurdwara. On the third day we went to a Christian church.
Then after we had learned about the different religions we were told that we were going to create an infographic of one of the religion’s worldview. We got Islam as our religion we had to make an infographic about. First we learned what an infographic was and how to make a good one.
An infographic is basically a way of giving you information more visually. So instead of wrighting a hole report about the Kowloon Walled City
you could do this:
These are all the drafts of our infograohic
these are everyone’s finished infographics
What an amazing way to learn….for me too. Great job Fraser.
