Since the end of winter break we have been doing a unit on Romeo and Juliet. As we read though the play we also watched two movies: Frank Zeffirelli’s Romeo and Juliet (1968) and Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo and Juliet (1996). We used Historical Perspective to compare them to the play and each other to see how people have adapted and reacted to the play over time. Then we wrote an essay on a topic of our choice within Romeo and Juliet I choose to write about how Friar Lawrence was most at fault for Romeo and Juliets death. For main project of this unit we all got to write are own parody of a scene from the play. Our driving question was: How can we, as Shakespearean actors, use parody to communicate the timeless nature of Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet”? I think parodies are a great way of communicating not just parodies but again because it can let us look at things that we think we know so well in a different and sometimes comedic way and that can really open our eyes to new things. I choose the scene where the Friar tells Juliet his plan. I made this into a parody of a coach giving a pep talk.
