The worldview and religion unit. What did we do during this unit? More like what didn’t we do. But I’m going to try my best to sum up and talk about what we did cover in this unit. And when I say we. I mean the PLP 8 class (no I don’t refer to myself as plural).
Worldview
Before the class started on all the effect of religion on worldview, we started with worldivew. What is worldview? How does it affect us? and so on. So to take a little look at worldview, we made first a mind map of our worldview and then a “explain everything” (click on the video if you want to view it.), you can see the mind map and the explain everything below.
Religion
Part of the unit was to study and understand more about different religions and about their impact on Worldview, apart from reading a writing a whole bunch of stuff in class, we went on 3 different Field Studies to six different establishments. The first one was to a Mosque and to a Synagogue, the second one was to a Gudwara (Sikh temple) and to a Hindu Temple and the third one was to a Church.
The Mosque (Islam)
The Synagogue (Judaism)
I found the religions, such as Buddhism, Sikhism and Hinduism very interesting because well a) they were completely foreign to me and b) I had grown up around Judaism, Christianity and had Muslim friends so I knew more so about those religions (which is not to say that I wasn’t floored by the amount of stuff I learnt about each of those religions) and on top of that, those three religions are Abramic religions. Therefore they all have common roots, while Buddhism, Hinduism and Sikhism might have some things in common with the three abramic religions, they are completely different in other aspects.
The Gudwara (Sikhism)
The Buddhist Temple
The Church (Christianity)
Religions impact on Worldview
Through out the unit we studied religion and worldivew sperately and together. We studied how Religion affected different aspects of worldview such as geography, time, values, economy, knowledge and society to name a few. During the field study each group was assigned a religion and when we went to each religious establishment we had to ask them questions based on how religion affected different aspects of their worldview. My group and I got Islam and we learnt about the five pillars of Islam, i.e. the five rules Muslims must abide. We learnt that the five pillars affect the values, geography, knowledge and society aspects of worldview for muslims. We also learnt about: Mohammad,The Qu’ran amongst other things.
The Ultimate Goal
The last project of the worldview/religion impact was to create an infographic about the worldivew of the religion which we were assigned. My group chose to make an infographic about the five pillars of Islam and how it affected the different aspects of worldview and how the five pillars affected everyday life for Muslims.
To end this post I’m just going to have a short conclusion: This unit was very eye opening for me. I learnt so much about so many different religions and about the different factors that influence worldview. Fun Fact: Did you know that Muslims must always face Mecca when they pray?
Thanks for Reading!
