Mpol stands for Mid-year presentation of learning. We have to do a 7 minute presentation to one of our teachers and our parents about our growth as a learner throughout the year. I have to answer a couple of questions for this:
How have I demonstrated growth as a learner so far this year?
How can I sharpen my Learning Plan to ensure I will reach my learning targets by the end of this school year?
Also, before I forget, I also have to say the ‘presentation of learning declaration’-
“Thank you for coming to my presentation of learning. I am the expert on my own learning. I am also responsible and accountable for my own learning. You can expect me to give an honest evaluation of my progress. We will discuss my strengths and opportunities for growth. Thank you in advance for listening and for offering feedback that I can use to improve as a learner.”
Here’s some parts of my learning plan:
The core competencies:
For all the competencies under communication and thinking, I think I’ve met the goal that I wanted to achieve for the profiles. For all the others, I think I’m working on them still.
Strengths, growths, and support
I’ve gotten much better at presenting in front of groups and reflecting on my learning, but I still have trouble critiquing others work.
And now for the disposition, habits, and systems part of my learning plan
Disposition: Most of the time, I am not focused on my goals. I am aware of the goals. I know I must achieve them. But I usually lose focus, and if it’s homework I’m trying to complete, I usually leave it to the night before it’s due. Sometimes though, if it’s something I would enjoy doing, I might focus on that.
Habits: I do check Showbie everyday, usually when I get home. I do put all my assignments in Things. The only thing I have trouble with is focusing on schoolwork when there are so many other things I could be doing, and sometimes I get bored of an assignment so I jump to some other one, and then I get nothing done. For almost all of homework I’m given though, I get it turned in on time.
Systems: Steps 1-2 of this system, I do everyday. For step 3, I work on whatever’s due soonest most of the time, but I don’t do one assignment at a time, I do a bit of work on a couple of assignments, and then things eventually get done.
Humanities-
So far we’ve done 3 projects in humanities. The Medium is the Message, The Outsiders, and Working with Words.
Over the course of these projects, I’ve gotten better at speaking and presenting in front groups of people. By doing the tableau presentation for Outsiders, and Working With Words, I had to present and speak in front of a lot of people. I used to get very anxious and panicky if I had to talk in front of people I didn’t know, but now I’ve done 2 exhibitions and 1 coffee house poetry performance, and it doesn’t seem like a big deal to talk in front of groups anymore.
I’m going to show a couple of highlights from throughout all of Humanities so far:
Outsiders tableau:
I liked this project because we finally got to read a book. I thought it was nice that we could share all of our ideas with our classmates, and hear what others thought of the book.
My favourite part of this project was when Sofia and I made a police car out of a cardboard box and paper for our tableau scene.
I was a bit nervous right before the exhibition, but after we went through our scene a few times, it went by pretty quickly, and it wasn’t too bad.
My amazing book of poetry:
Before we started this project, I wasn’t sure if I would like it or not, but, I like how my poetry book turned out, so that’s nice. On the day that we were doing the coffee house poetry reading livestream thing, one of my teachers, Ms. Willemse, asked if I wanted to read my self- portrait poem. I said yes, even though I was a bit nervous. It went alright, only thing that happened that went ever so slightly wrong was that half way through reading my poem, it came to my attention that I was on mute, and I had to restart.
Maker-
We’ve done a few projects for this. Becoming a PLP Learner, Constructing Creative Communication (Herzog and Carr), the Geek out Blogging Challenge, and Destination Imagination
Over the course of these projects, I’ve learned a few ways how to express myself. A few of these being drawing, taking photos, and writing.
I’m going to show my highlight from throughout all of Maker so far:
Geek out blogging challenge, my favourite post that I did:
I really liked doing the geek out challenge because we were allowed to do whatever topic we wanted. I chose Japan because I thought it would be cool to write about and I know a lot about it.
And last but not least,
Scimatics
We’ve done 3 projects. Fractions of Your Time, Tectonic Chances, and Laser Laws. In these projects, I learned that there is always a choice to extend on a project if you want.
I also learned that if you forget something, it helps if you look back on previous assignments to see what you’ve forgotten.
I’m going to show a couple of highlights from throughout all of Scimatics so far:
Tectonic Chances, board game:
Tectonic Chances was my favourite Scimatics project. I really like how my end product turned out, and I had a lot of fun coming up with the story and all the confusing dice rolling rules. Also creating the pieces was fun, except cutting out a vast amount of cards and glueing them together was rather time consuming.
Laser Laws, laser display:
For Laser Laws, I think I could have done better for Milestones 4 & 5. In 4, I revised it twice, but I had forgotten some important knowledge from earlier in project, and if I had remembered that, I could’ve done better. In 5, I think I could’ve helped more with setting up the laser and mirrors. I had a good team for this, which was nice because we all worked well together.
I don’t think I have anything left to say, I hope this presentation is 7 minutes long, or I can draw it out, to be that long, because I left this until the night before my Mpol, which is at 9:45 am, and it’s late, and I don’t want to practice right now…
Anyway, thanks for reading and have a good night (or day)!
