Power of a Pencil (Carr)
Skill 1: Using pressure
Skill 2: Doodling
Skill 3: Shading
Skill 4: Perspective
Skill 5: Using colour
Hello once again! I finished the second half of my maker class. This time instead of Herzog, we switched to Carr! This time, we learned creative communication through our Apple Pencil!! It was a little different than group Herzog. We worked mainly on the app Sketches Pro. While in group Carr, I learned a lot about drawing, shading, pressure, doodling, perspective and using colour. We got to talk to a graphic designer Chloe Devine (you can view her website here).
I know how to do a lot more while drawing now! I do a lot of drawing outside of school, so this class did help me a lot. After being in this group, Im now able to draw things like this:
We first got working on all of the features of Sketches Pro, and the Apple Pencil. We got to draw out and test out all of Sketches Pro’s features. We got to see what we would be working with for the next few weeks. One major thing that I learned is DO NOT ACCIDENTALLY DOUBLE TAP YOUR SCREEN WHILE IN SKETCHES PRO!!!!! I learned that double tapping your screen can delete your recent stroke. So I restarted my drawings a couple times. I now know that there is a way to get your drawings back. I wish I knew that sooner. Anyway we started off easy. We got to practise writing our names. Our task was to write our names including patterns, colours, and different features from the app. Here is my name drawing I did!
After we got the main ideas down, we got to practise our doodling skills. We started off drawing some basic 2d shapes. Our task for this milestone was to draw an emoji that showed our emotions. Here is how mine turned out! I learned how to match the colours with the actual emoji.
Our next task I actually really enjoyed trying out, we got to take a photo of a mug to add shading to make it look 3D. I think I did an okay job. We also got to practise drawing 3D shapes to get an idea of how we will add shading. I learned that when we do shading, we can use the sides of our apple pencils to have a shading effect. Here are some of the shading reflections I did!
This is the one that I struggled with the most. I don’t think the actual drawing was the hardest part, but the actual planing out what I was going to draw. We got to watch a video talking about perspective lines, point of view, and stuff like that. We learned what makes a drawing more realistic, and we also got to try out making lines into a room. We learned what the vanishing point is as well. The vanishing point is the point of a drawing where you can no longer see. For example, when you look down a hallway, there is a point where you can no longer see anymore.
We went around the school looking for a place to take a picture and practise this perspective.
Lastly, we got to talk to Chloe Devine. She taught us about what it’s liked being a graphic designer, and stuff like that. A few of the kids (including me) got to go up and ask a question. I learned that Chloe Devine sometimes spends over 10 hours on her work!! That’s pretty crazy. My nana is a watercolour artist, and spends days working on her art sometimes. She says the longest shes worked on a project was 18 hours at least. Anyway, we got to design a logo for a business. Here’s mine!
My idea of a business is a cat rescue facility. Instead of “Yearning” I did “Yarning” Because cats love yarn. Get it?
Anyway, thank you for reading!
