For our second last Math project of the year we were given the subject of like terms and told to do whatever we wanted as long as it was included. We were first split into groups of two, I was paired with Melanie and we started the project just before spring break. Now what are like terms you might ask well that is a very good question that I still ask myself to this day. Now like terms is a sort of subdivision of polynomial where the combination of similar terms in a polynomial equation is used to simplify the problem or as Wikipedia puts it: “In algebra, like terms are terms that have the same variables and powers. The coefficients do not need to match”
Now when we went about choosing a project a few ideas came to mind and the one that we chose would be “how would an advanced LEGO user use like terms to determine the cost of something they saw online”. So I brought in some LEGO and we began to look through some designs on the internet. Eventually we came across a dinosaur and after constructing it by looking at the photo we gave the lizard a top hat for extra style.
With that out the way it was time to put the like terms to use. Melanie worked on the equation while I figured out the official prices from the official LEGO website. We combined our two points of research and got the full equation. I feel like us working on separate parts and bringing them together shows good communication competency.
Finally we needed a way to present, I originally made a video but that was scrapped after some time and we ended up making a keynote presentation which we performed in front of the class.
It was about as fun as math gets but the ability to choose anything made it enjoyable.
