World War Two was a tough time for Canada, coming straight out of a depression into all out total war. With Canada becoming more independent, they made their own choice whether to join the war, rather than being forced into it by Britain joining. Canada made a huge choice to go into the war coming straight out of the depression using car manufacturers to build tanks and shipyards to build naval ships. With Canada coming out of a depression I can’t imagine producing all of this equipment for the war effort wouldn’t have them set back some more. The army would be supplying jobs for the people that are unemployed. The army offering $1.30 a day and $60 a month to the soldiers spouse and $30 to the soldiers children. This really attracted people to sign up for the Canadian army.
Doing the soldier research is super interesting. Looking at a bunch of different people who contributed a lot for Canada. I did my research on Tommy Prince, a really well known soldier who fought in the 1st Canadian Special Service Battalion. Tommy Prince was born in Manitoba and one of eleven children. Prince was trained rigorously in stealth tactics, hand to hand combat, the use of explosives, amphibious assaults, and alpine warfare. Prince’s particular role was to scout forward and observe enemy movements. Princes most famous stunt was in Italy of 1944 when he was disguised as a farmer who planted crops in a farm and lived in an abounded house about 200 metres away from a German camp. Prince would stare Germany’s army in the face multiple times. Prince would go down and plant crops but really would be putting down a communications wire to view Germans positions and movements. The wire had eventually damaged from the shelling. Prince being unfazed by the situation grabs his farming tools goes out and bends down in front of the guards staring at him pretending to tie his shoe and he fixes the wire being as discreet as possible. Tommy Prince was a stealthy killer, slitting the throats of many Germans by sneaking up on them. Prince was known to move like a shadow. He was trained to be stealthy. He would not only be stealthy to kill them, but to also steal from the Germans. Tommy Prince seemed like a character straight from a video game.
The soldier research is a quite exciting thing to do. It shows what the Canadian soldiers did for our country. When I reseadched Tommy Princes it almost felt like a video game or a movie character. It’s hard to imagine someone have the guts to do something like this and not be fazed by others trying to kill you. It’s inspiring to know people who go and fight for your country and to stop discrimination against Canadian cultures. Tommy Prince not only fought for Canada but for First Nations rights. He was turned away from the army several times because of his cultural identity until they finally let him join. Tommy Prince was a real hero to Canadian aboriginal peoples.
