WW1 left a mark on the world as being “the war to end all wars”. This was made out to be because of how gruesome and brutal this war was. Human beings digging and fighting in trenches and the dirty mud, degrading the soldiers to animals. No one ever wanted to see the world come to that ever again. “The Great War” was ended by Germany not surrendering, but signing an armistice to agree to stop the war.
With the war being over brought crucial conversations by the all of the major powers. In January of 1919 a conference was held in Versailles, Paris to discuss peace terms for the central powers (Germany, Austria-Hungary, The Ottoman Empire). The main voices of the conference was Woodrow Wilson who was the president of the United States, Georges Clemenceau who was the prime minister of France, the prime minister of the United Kingdom David Lloyd George, and the prime minister of Italy Vittorio Emanuele Orlando, these guys where known as “The Big Four”.
The main outcome of the conference was “The Treaty of Versailles”. The treaty consisted of Germany taking fault for the war, they lost their military and navy, lost some land, and asked for their new government to step down from power. They had to pay huge reparations to certain countries that had formed the Entente powers (Russia, France, Britain). In 1921 the total cost of these reparations was assessed at the 132 billion mark.
Another main result of the conference was the League of Nations. This was the first international organization who’s main goal was to maintain world peace. The League of Nations was built off of Woodrow Wilson’s 14 points, the odd part was The US never joined it. They tackled the worlds issues without using conflict, and the League continued until 1946.
