Today, unfortunately marks the end for two of the associates of our star crossed lovers. Mercutio and Tybalt were both killed today, leaving a hole in many hearts.
Mercutio was slain by Tybalt when he stepped in to fight Tybalt when Romeo refused too, and then when Tybalt came back later in a guilt driven rage that he had killed Mercutio by not fighting, Romeo murdered Tybalt in a sword fight and wasn’t seen again at that spot.
When the honest Benvolio was left alone at the spot, the prince came and Benvolio told him the whole story of sadness, madness, and murder. As the killing of Tybalt by Romeo was in revenge, the punishment was not murder, but for him it might have been worse. He was banished from Verona, to never see Juliet again and to live the rest of his life in sadness and heartbreak, and to never love again.
Both of the elders of the houses tried to fight this decision, Lord and Lady Capulet wanted Romeo dead for this murder, Lord and Lady Montague wanted no punishment for their son, for in their eyes he had done no wrong and was just a victim of Tybalts craziness and the rage it brought on, but there was no swaying the prince, this was the fair ruling in his mind and so this was done.
But the real question we have to ask ourselves here is, why do we have to go through such tragedy to get things done, why can’t we stop the fighting before tragedy happens, not after.
I wrote this for an assignment, and the criteria for the assignment looked like this “In Act III, i, we see the deaths of two major characters. Write the newspaper or record the television report on their deaths. You can choose to write in Shakespearean or modern English. Think about how the Chorus acts as a commentary. Become the Chorus for this event.” So I just started writing and writing and writing about what might be in a newspaper article and then narrowed it down, this is my third draft. I tried to portray this as a sad article about the consequences of conflict and how conflict only leads to more conflict. I hope you got that.
Thanks for reading, stay posted for my next article.
