The black hole is a short thriller film written and directed by Phillip Samson and Olly Williams. It follows what seems like the average office worker but before he can do it his printer appears to not be working correctly and prints out a blank piece of paper with a massive black whole printed on it. He soon figures out how it works and uses it try and steal from a vending machine (he puts the piece of paper outside the vending machine and sticks his hand inside of it), which worked perfectly and gave him an idea. He puts the paper outside the door and with his other hand opens the door from the inside. He goes inside the mysterious, finds a vault puts the paper on it’s surface and starts taking out cash from it. He has a great lot of cash but he just keeps on taking it but he finally puts his whole body inside trying to take out even more but ends up getting stuck in the black hole.
I personally believe that this film is great but that it also accomplishes it’s main purpose of thrilling the audience this is as it has all three things that every great thriller should have. Contract (a promise made to the audience), The promise this film made it’s viewer is to simply provide information about this misterious black hole. The film actually managed to accomplish this really well as it explained how it worked while also keeping the object misterious and building up to the climax. I felt like they slowly provided information about the black hole to keep the audience interested but they didn’t show how it worked completely to keep the mystery in the film (it helps the suspense of the movie and kept the audience intrigued)
The second one is clock (a sense of the protagonist racing against time), This film actually brings a lot more focus to clock than it did to any other element as it made it the main focus of it’s climax. The climax consisted on the protagonist stealing money from a vault in the company he works at by using the black hole as a key but where it actually shows clock is when the man is rushing to take all of the cash and the clock is ticking but he rushed to hard so he fell into the black hole and got trapped there. I feel like they made the climax have a clock element as it added suspense to the film (the fear of someone or something catching him) and made the audience actually fearful of what was to come.
Finally there’s crucible (which is that the challenges the protagonist faces slowly increase in difficulty, size and in danger). This film shows crucible in a relatively interesting way as it slowly builds up the things the black hole can be used in. It started up small like putting a cup of water in there but it slowly builds up to using the black hole to steal from the vending machine to the climax where he tries to steal from the company he works at by using the black hole on the vault (the hardest task of all because of the pressure involved). I believe that they slowly built up the film as just like in the other elements it keeps the audience interested as well as thrilling them.
Overall I believe that these choices were effective for the most part as the film did a great job in crucible and in clock as crucible was the main focus of the film (the black hole slowly being used for harder and bigger tasks) and clock as this was the main focus of the climax (the protagonist rushing while taking cash from the safe). Unfortunatly I personally believe that the film could’ve done a better job with contract as the promise that it made to the audience wasn’t the most interesting and a different one could’ve added much more to the thrilling aspect of the film. I personally would’ve simply changed the promise the film made to something more engaging and I would’ve spent some more time building up to the climax as it would’ve made it even more suspenseful
