What is identity?

Identity is how you view yourself, as well as the aspects and habits that define you.

For our project “project podcast” we’re focusing on answering questions like, what is identity and what is my identity. In this post I’m reviewing what identity means in general, but also what my identity is.

Like I mentioned above in my short answer identity has a lot to do with the subject (the one with the identity.) Which means your identity is mostly decided by you, and what you identify as. Things like your favourite sport, favourite song and favourite hobbies are chosen by you, you like them which make them apart of who you are. In my GIF to show this part of my identity, I put images of my favourite albums and drawings of my favourite animal and car. All of which mean something to me, and are apart of how I view or want to view myself.

Another big part of you’re identity is you’re name. You’re name is the first thing you tell people about yourself. Back in the day your last name was a way people knew your family. Usually your name had a reputation or story. Which is still partially true today. Your name usually reminds you of things, whether its a feeling a memory or colour. For example my name reminds me of orange, blue and purple colours, which is why I incorporated them in my GIF.

The next major part of identity is what you address yourself as. Things like culture, religion and sexuality. These three things are usually pretty important to people, and are of course a big part of who they are. Often somebody’s culture, religion and sexuality impacts the other aspects of identity. For example where you come from can be the reason you have a certain name.

In my GIF I demonstrate this part of my identity through the German, Ukrainian and Canadian flags. Which tie into my identity because they’re apart of my culture, and were important places to my family’s past.

Overall your identity is what you consider to be you, whether if its what you’re called or the religion you practice. Its all a part of you’re identity.
