SMART Goals

Back at the blogging, only change now is the fact we’re now in grade 10. To kick this new year off we took at a chance wiht goal setting for our planning 10 unit. It all started off with creating a fairly basic goal of ten words that we wanted to attain throughout the year. It could be more than one thing you wanted to do as long as it didn’t exceed the word limit. The next step would be to creating a few SMART goal. So I went with:

Communicate with teachers

Assignments in early

Balance sports and school

These are the three main things I would like to achieve this year. I’ve struggled with all three for the past two years and in my TPOL last year I decided that this would finally be the year where I pulled through on all of these things.

SLC? Nope, TPOL!

Now moving on to the bigger project for our SMART Goal lesson. What is a SMART goal? Well, SMART is an acronym for

S- Specific

M- Measurable

A- Attainable

R- Realistic, Relevant, Rigorous, Results Focused

T- Timely, Trackable

Whenever you’re goal setting, you should think about whether or not the way you’ve written it out relates to every one of these key points. Once we got a good understanding of what SMART goals are and how to create them, we were tasked with making three of our own. One for something we wanted to improve on in school, one for character and lastly, one for something we wanted to achieve outside of school.

We started off by brainstorming our main ideas for what we wanted to improve on in each area, then we shared them with our table group who gave us advice and feedback. From there we had to make them SMART. Making sure how we described them fit every aspect of the acronym was quite challenging even with my goal setting skills from sports, we’ve never had to make them so in depth before.

The next step in this project is to turn these goals into audio and include a visual to go with each goal. For my visuals I just created simple drawings in paper 53

The reason for this goal is that I’ve always struggled with keeping up in school. I had a few meeting with my teachers and parents about it last year and decided where I was failing the most was my communication with my teachers. Whether it’s about some school days I’ll be missing or asking for feedback on my work. If I can start doing that then I think for this year I’ll be able to stay ahead in school as well as produce better work.

Another thing I’ve found difficult in the past is being wrong so that’s effecting me by not wanting to ask questions in class or give my opinions. Since I personally can’t get started on a project until I fully understand it, it will be extremely beneficial if I could ask questions, either in class or after. I’m going to need to start keeping a list of questions and things I don’t understand from the criteria or project and ask them at the end of the class.

Final goal, this is my most important goal for the year, balance. One of the most important things to me has always been my athletics. A majority of the time I’ll put them before my schooling so I need to find that perfect balance between the two. This will also need to be done by communicating with my teachers about my personal schedule as well as the upcoming projects in the class. Another thing I’ll need to do is keep track of my priorities, what school will I have to miss for sports and figuring out when I’ll need to miss some athletics for a project or to catch up on work.

This was the first project of our new planning ten unit and I’ve got to say I liked it quite a bit. I have quite a big history with goal setting due to all my sports, the one thing is I’ve never always kept myself accountable for them. This year I’m going to set a fourth goal and that is to follow through on each of these goals. I’ve said what I need to do to achieve them so now I don’t have a reason to not do them.
