What do you Want to be?

This is the pro shop where Trevor McLean (my shadow) works

So many people have asked me this question over the years and I still don’t have an answer to that question. I simply don’t know what I want to do. I could see myself in so many different fields and I don’t want narrow my focus when I know I could go so many different places if I put my mind to it. To help clarify some potential futures I planned 2 job shadows. These job shadows would help me get a better feel for the fields I could enter. One of the job shadows was at my golf club, where I shadowed a pro who I knew. My second shadow was with a lawyer who works at a local clinic in Vancouver. Although the second job shadow with the lawyer fell through I will share with you my experiences in my first job shadow

I worked with a lower level staff for a few hours during my job shadow to get a better feel for the field

I plan to go into a field that keeps me interested year-round. I don’t think that being a golf pro will accomplish that but it is a field that I am interested in because it would allow me to golf more than any other field.

During the shadow, I spoke with Trevor about many of the benefits of being a pro. The big point I took out of talking with him was that being a golf pro would give me the opportunity to be at the course more than anywhere else I could work but it means a lot of hours for very little pay. As you get more of presence and provide more lessons you can increase your salary but it would never get higher than I could get in more academic fields. This was interesting because it gives me the decision between what interests more because money is not the only thing important to my decisions. It gives me plenty to think about for my future.

The pro shop is the central hub for the golf course and where I would spend most of my time if I were to work as a pro

Although the job shadow fell through at the law clinic I did learn a little about the clinic because the law assistant at the clinic showed us around. There seemed to be a blend of student and workers working at the clinic. He made many comments about how important it is to be organized when working in the field of law. It essential that you have an extraneous work ethic to be successful. I took in a lot of information about the law clinic but it was pretty limited because the worker who guided us was unprepared for us. Overall, I learned a lot about the nature of working in law and I found it quite informative

The job shadow experience was interesting because it was such a different setting than what I am used in school. Even compared to my summer job it was still quite different. It gave me exposure to different things and provoked some thought about who I want to be. I still do not know what I will become in my future but I think I have a better idea now than I did before these job shadows.

Working in a healthy and vibrant environment is one of my top priorities
