So far in maker, we have been focusing on recreating comedic videos. When I first learned about our project this them I was quite skeptical of how we were going to translate the jokes from one video to another. My skepticism is shown in our first recreation video ”Catch”.
The video ”Catch” by Joe Hartzle was a sort of funny video that was able to turn an everyday event into a horror movie trailer. The basic premise of the video was that two friends go out to play catch, one of them turns out being possessed and keeps overthrowing the ball. The video follows a story structure that is very similar to most other trailers, rising action, rising action, climax, cliffhanger. When we recreated the video we bypassed all of the main steps and skipped right to the fun stuff. When you watch the video you can really see why I was so sceptical of transferring the humour from one video to anouther.
In my group I had three people, Luca Jacoe, Emily Jansen, and Myself. This was a very strong group and we were able to get all of the filming and editing down in one day. Emily provided us with the recreated music, Luca Jacoe edited, and I provided my group with my incredible acting. Most of the work we did was outside class time.
The main element we learned was how important it is to focus on the tiny details which we capitalized on in our second recreation video. In the second video we planned to perfection. We started off giving different job’s to different people. I was in charge of the screenplay, Luca was in charge of editing, and Emily was in charge of the storyboard.
The video that we chose for this recreation was a video by Matthias called, the 99 cents store will kill you. This was a great video that I won’t bother explaining because it won’t do itself justice. When we came together to film Emily and Luca had created all of these great props that really helped create a similarity to the original video. When you watch this video you can see why the humour could transfer over.
Overall I realized that recreating a video is a lot harder than making an original one. My conclusion was mostly based on the fact that perfection was harder to come by than creativity. I personally liked knowing how my character was supposed to act, but didn’t like that you couldn’t put your own spin on things. Ms. Willemse always said this is a recreation, not a parody.
