šŸ‡ØšŸ‡¦The World Needs More CanadašŸ‡ØšŸ‡¦

Every Canadian has a few things in common. Picture your on vacation. You tell the locals that youā€™re a Canadian and they might just assume toĀ think of you as Ā« polite Ā» or Ā« well mannered Ā» which may be but thereā€™s just so much more to the Canadian persona of wide smiles, the colour red, hockey, cold climate, Timmieā€™s, and our beloved maple syrup. In this project, we explored what exactly makes Canada so great by investigating different events or characteristics specific to our country.

Driving Question: Why does the world need more ā€œCanadaā€?

The world can can certainly use a little more Canada for an abundance of reasons. But why? What makes Canada so awesome and what does it bring to the international table? Well, our grade 10 cohort came up with an answer to those questions through a few investigations exploring the resemblance of Canadian Identity. Now, I will be briefly touching the those topics we researched about. Enough talk, lets get into what we learned!

SHORT STORIESšŸ’Æ

LEARNING STATEMENT: Looking back on the short stories we learned reflecting Canadian identity. In this investigation, I expressed an in-depth understanding/analyzation providing evidence of extending characteristics in my learning.

  • EXTENDING CHARACTERISTICS DEMONSTRATED
    • Cogent
    • Real-world
    • Deep
    • Insightful
  • HOW THESE CHARACTERISTICS WERE DEMONSTRATED

One of my strengths I feel that Iā€™ve had in school more recently is having the ability to see things from a deeper perspective as well as thinking outside the box- the aspects that people often overlook. I can think beyond what what I can see and I think thatā€™s because of the accumulation of books I read over summer which was a goal I made for myself going into the break. By setting and doing that goal, Iā€™m quite proud of myself but there is always more work to do and the next book Iā€™m going to take on is 48 Laws of Power.

I was able to express these strengths by ensuring I absorbed as much information in the book as possible by not just glancing through, but spending the time to truly understand the message that the book is conducting.

Not only was I able to identify the morals in each book reflecting the Canadian persona, I was able to reflect in my own words on it as well. In each reflection I created a clear and concise summary on each element of the book touching the plot, character selection, setting, POV (e.g. first person), internal + external conflicts, the overall theme, and mood of the book.Ā

PODCAST: GUARDIANS OF MEMORYšŸŒˆ

LEARNING STATEMENT: Looking back on my podcast we explored the boundaries of recent news posted on the national in search of a relevant topic to Canada. In this investigation, I expressed a complete understanding/analyzation providing evidence of proficiency in my learning.Ā  Ā  Ā

  • PROFICIENT CHARACTERISTICS DEMONSTRATED
    • Comprehensive
    • Detailed
    • Solid
    • Mainstream
  • HOW THESE CHARACTERISTICS WERE DEMONSTRATED

I felt that in this project, I really demonstrated the proficient characteristics above through my creativity as well as using various strategies to attract an audience. I did this by picking a topic that everyone could relate to; man/woman/ or child/adult, but many people have different experiences when it comes to Remembrance Day or Truth and Reconciliation Day which could look like a war memorial or an indigenous tribal ceremony.Ā

When I checked the class podcast, I knew there were going to be at least a few podcasts based on immigration since thereā€™s a wide variety of takes you can have on immigration but I was a little shocked on just how many chose that subject which relieves me as I figured that not many people wouldā€™ve picked Remembrance Day, nonetheless, I had a very clear vision on what my podcast would look like if I picked this which made things a whole lot easier.Ā

In this project, I really displayed my growth in my ability to attract an audience by telling a story that hooks the audience in the beginning and explained the details on the impact after the fact. Aside from my podcast, I felt that by listening to a few podcasts for reference not only suggested by the teachers but also on my own time when Iā€™m walking home or on the drive to school, it really payed off in the end.

Overall, although Canada isnā€™t perfect when it comes to our history of indigenous injustices, I believe that these stat holidays showcase Canadaā€™s growth in our societal unity by just having the ability to admit our screw-ups of the past (which obviously doesnā€™t excuse the countless graves on residential school grounds) which is a step towards spreading awareness on the countless souls that lost their lives in the heat of battle and the indigenous abuse.Ā

To sum up all the points Iā€™ve covered reflecting the true brilliance of Canada, I will finish my argument with a few final points Iā€™d like to make.

  • National recognition of bravery; a peaceful, inclusive society that accepts all.
  • Role as a worldwide representative of human rights and overall freedom.
  • Our ability to cooperate as a team; through a collective of ceremonial meetings to wearing a poppy on your shirt during Remembrance Day (my topic).
  • Free healthcare among all Canadians from citizens to immigrants
  • Respect, acts of care towards nature, and environmental maintenance- Majestic scenery of tall snowy mountains, perfect blue lakes, and thick forests stretching all across BC and Alberta. The prairies (a.k.a. The flatlands of Canada) on the other hand, share beautiful characteristic too, known for their unique patches of fields and farming.
  • Our general diversity as Canada is recognized as constantly-changing place in terms of both population and cultural diversity. You may think this divesity may divide us but as I said before, Canada is an ever changing place and we value differences because thatā€™s just part of us we are united by the fact that not all of us are the same but we are together. This diversity may be international students (which Iā€™ll get into in my thinking Thursday) or just newcomers looking for a better life as Canada ranks in at #5 for quality of life as well as #4 in best countries overall in the world.
