ATOMIC HABITS (Reflection Post)

What has PGP 10 in the PLP program been doing for the past month? Essentially, we’ve done something that’s similar but different to our annual learning plans (for more, click on the link below)⬇️

Rather this year, PLP has decided to add another POL to the list: a Pre-POL. Now you may be thinking this is all about students presenting to parents and teachers, but surprisingly, it’s quite the opposite (aside from reading Atomic Habits, building an artififact representing habit setting strategies based from the book that we can make for ourselves, and creating a Vision, Mission, Values (VMV for short). ⬇️

Crazy right? Exactly my thoughts. This year, our parents explained how they can help us students, achieve our learning goals. We started by presenting our atomic artifact as well as VMV (and/or our learning intentions) then we discussed and agreed on the habits I chose, and finally, recorded a short audio with our parents explaining their role in ensuring we achieve our learning targets for this year, and beyond.

ANSWER TO THE DRIVING QUESTION: HOW CAN SMALL CHANGES IN MY HABITS SHAPE MY SUCCESS THIS YEAR, AND BEYOND?

By establishing minute changes in my life for the better, my success can be impacted drastically. Through constantly setting small goals for myself, it’s impossible not to improve both quickly and effectively. If I make good habits that don’t cause friction in my life now, they’ll get easier as life goes on to the point where I won’t even have to think about performing them, saving my mental capacity for new challenges that come my way. The habits that James Clear talked about genuinely stuck with me and I can already see places in my life in which they can fill. I’m confident that if I maintain the level of growth in all areas of my life that I’m at right now, by having my priorities, values, and time management straight, I can achieve the learning targets that I set for myself in my VMV.

EVIDENCE

1. BOOK

While reading Atomic Habits, it’s fair to say that, James Clear’s lessons quite resonated with me. He wrote the book in as simple terms as possible so any audience may understand the book. In my opinion, the book could have been a lot shorter, but at the same time I think that repeating and reviewing certain concepts of the book really payed off in terms of locking the messages into the readers brain. In short, I thought the book was very cleverly and carefully written.

2. ME

Both my VMV and Artifact correspond with each other in many aspects. While my Mission in my VMV is more general and summarized towards how I’m going to achieve my goal, my Artifact really gets into the nitty-gritty of the specific habits based from Atomic Habits and how they can apply to all areas of my life. For example, lotus of my artifact revolves around time through management, balance, organization, etc.

3. PARENTS

I had a genuinely valuable/in-depth conversation with my parents extending outside of the chocolate, onto the ride home, and eventually, even more conversing later. We discussed on how involved they are in my school life, both agreeing that they are very involved (in annoying but positive ways) with my mom always checking my Showbie every night in search for a late assignment or them clarifying with me to see where I’m at in each subject.

From what they analyzed, they also gave me a few learning targets for this year. For example, they want me to make sure I manage my distractions and the way they can help ensure this is by enabling downtime on apps that may potentially distract me, then over time once I show responsibility in managing my own distractions, they can disable the restrictions. This has been something that has worked since grade 8 and my work has shown unrecognizable growth since then.
