In past blog posts, I’ve eluded to the fact that the whole Flight class would be going to Florida for a field study for our Imaginary Worlds/Fantasy unit which we’ve been working on for the past few months. Well, the time finally came and went for us to go to Florida, and it was definitely one of the most fun “field trips” that I’ll probably ever have. Either way, I’ll be talking about what we did in Florida as it was a really eventful trip.
It started at four in the morning at YVR (the Vancouver airport) and we were all standing around, tired but excited to go to Florida. We first traveled to Seattle for a connecting flight to Florida. Luckily, they were pretty close flights so we didn’t have to stand around for long. After the five hour flight from Seattle to Florida, we were assigned to a minivan driven by one of our chaperones and went straight to the popular restaurant, Cracker Barrel. Afterwards, we finally got to our hotels which we then got to roam for a couple of hours until we had to sleep.
For the rest of the trip, we were waking up early and going to sleep late due to how packed or days were. We surfed, got to visit the different lands in Disney World, so some sight seeing, visit Universal Studios, and more. We were lucky enough to have fast passes for Disney World as that meant we got to breeze by the lines of some of the rides throughout our days spent there. As for Universal Studios, the lines were very short to begin with so there was no problem in terms of line waits.
There were definitely some highlights in the trip. For example, the thrill rides in Universal Studios were among one of my favourite things. When we had free time, we would ride some of the roller coasters over and over again, never stopping. There was also a Mardi Gras themed parade which was a really crazy experience. Another thing which stuck with me was the surfing class we took on the third day. Simply put, it was a lot of fun, and I’m really excited to start getting into it with some of my friends who also want to get better at surfing. That same day, we also visited this really shop called Ron Jon’s Surf Shop which had a lot of cool stuff to look at and buy. There were also some interesting places we went to eat. In of the places we went to eat, there was a big performance filled with singing and loud noises. Everyone was dressed like they were from the Wild West, and they included the audience throughout the show. Not to mention, the food there was pretty awesome. I took a liking to the strawberry shortcake we got for dessert.
Aside from all the fun, we also had to focus on getting footage for our “Making Fantasy Real” video which we had been planning for ahead of time. It was interesting to see all the ways people were getting footage too. Some had their GoPros which they took with them on their rides, others made time lapses of the crowds or lines, the list goes on and on. I had a few difficulties with my equipment, but that didn’t really cause a big problem for me in the long run, but I missed out on a few shots I wanted. There will soon be a blog for the video, which can give some more detail on the project itself and some reasons on how Space Mountain attracts people using imagination.
Until that blog post, that’s all I have to say. Florida was a great learning experience. Lot’s of us connected during the trip and found new friends. I think it’s fair to say that we all had a lot of fun during the trip and I REALLY (emphasis on really) hope that we do something like this again in the near future…
