For this project, I started by pondering what it is to be Canadian. One of the biggest definitions of Canadian identity is “not American”, but is that really true. While it is true that we aren’t American, what is the difference between Americans and Canadians. As I tried to discover the answer, I looked to actors. One of the first things that I found was a list of Canadians. Did you know that; Ryan Reynolds, Keanu Reeves, and Seth Rogan are all Canadians. Many of these names were people I thought were American, which shows you how similar we are to Americans. The reason for Canadians being so similar to Americans, is because so much of Americas culture spills over their borders into ours.
After learning why Canadians are similar to Americans, I wanted to know what makes a Canadian. In search of this answer, my class hosted a Human Library. In case you’re distrustful of random links (or just lazy), I’m here to tell you what a Human Library is. A Human Library is a safe place for “Books” (someone with a different experience than most other people) to talk about their experience and for “Readers” to ask questions. At our Human Library, students talked to people who had a different experience growing up. This ranged from people who lived in another country to someone who had multiple sclerosis. And even after all of this, the question of what is Canadian Identity is still hard to answer. Because Canadians aren’t just one thing, and there is no 1 identity. That’s why I think the Canadian identity is being accepting of everyone around you.
