Makenna’s Screen Time Blog Post

Β  Β  Β  Β  Β  Β  Β  Β Welcome back to my blog! Here is another blog post that is coming your way. For this project in scimatics we had to create a table that showed how much screen time we used in a week and what we use our screen time for. The driving question for this project was How much of my time is spent on screens? My answer to the driving question is that just under half of my week is spent on my screen.

Β  Β  Β  Β  Β  Β  Β  Β In my table I included two sections, one for everything I do on my iPad and one for everything I do on my phone. I then made five charts, three pie charts, and two other charts that you could flip through to see my iPad usage and my phone usage. I liked this project because it was fun and easy to understand the instructions which I found really helpful.Β The challenging parts of this project for me was presenting in front of the whole class and figuring out how to make the chart so that it would add up all the numbers itself.Β Something I made my own personal touches to were colour coordinating all of the different sections of my table and then doing the same with my charts. Doing this helped show which sections went together and which did not go together. Here are the three pie charts that I made and here is also the link to myΒ Screen time tracker.

Β  Β  Β  This is how I used my competencies to exceed on this project:

Applying and Innovating:

Β I applied and contributed to care for myself, and others by using my class time well to finish work, I also helped my friends if they got a question wrong on the math homework that we got and I read other peoples posts to help them make sure it was good to submit.

Β Understanding and Solving:

Β I showed how I can visualize to explore mathematical concepts by creating a table and recording my screen time for each day from Wednesday to Tuesday.

Communicating and Representing:

Β I was able to represent mathematical ideas in concrete, pictorial and symbolic forms by creating all of my charts and show the percentage of my total screen time. I made different charts to compare a week versus my total non-screen time in a week, my iPad entertainment versus productivity, and my iPad entertainment versus my phone social media. I also showed this by creating two other charts that show my total iPad usage and my total phone usage as I explained above.

Β  Β  Β  Β  Β  Β  Β  Β Over all I liked doing this project and I was surprised on how much I spend my screen time on certain apps. I also really enjoyed experimenting with the interactive charts and learning how to make them move. I also learned how to code the table to add up the final number of hours and how to make those numbers into charts. I look forward to using these skills in future projects.
