In the loving memory of Pvte. F. P. Eaton

Pvte F. P. Eaton

For this blog post we had to make a Diary Entry about a certain soldier that died during World War I.

I first had to find a soldier. To do this I used the Canadian War Memorial Website where I could look up a soldier that died during the war.

I had the great idea of searching the soldiers by date since it was impossible to go through all the men and find one that had information for me to write about. The date I chose was the first day of Vimy Ridge, April 9th 1917.

Here I found Frederick Peter Eaton, he enrolled in World War 1 and went overseas to represent Canada. He had plenty of primary sources included, some of which I found very intriguing. The most interesting source was a news article clipping.

This primary source told the story how Pvte F. P. Eaton enrolled with one of his close friends Pvte John Wood, and how they sadly both died the same day. This article also gave me information about him. Such as him being in war for 7 months before his death, and that he enrolled when he was 20. This article also gave me insight of how he was an only child, and how his mother was so heartbroken.
The site also included pictures, and some of his enrolment documents.

This document proves Pvte F. P. Eaton had been enrolled in way for three months.

The document above gives me an idea of what he looks like, such as that he had blue eyes, something I would not know with a black and white picture.

After analyzing all of my primary sources I wrote a diary entry in Eaton’s perspective.
Here it is;

I would like to say that I have written this diary entry and I have included some fictionary feelings that I personally assume Pvte F. P. Eaton was feeling at the time. I tried to make my project as serious as possible and I hope it was respectful too, as this is a serious matter.
