Journal Entry

August 15th, 1789: I thought I should start a journal for my day so I can keep track. Anyways, Today went well, me, Jessie and Callum had many sales, or at least the most we could for the things we had. I feel bad for living class A, they have nearly nothing, not even houses for most. At least if I need to tell them something that I can’t let the higher ups hear, I can use the trash so the trash collector can read it. I did hear a rumour that an idea has been expressed to start charging upper classes more for goods and taxes. Could just be a rumour though, I can never be sure.

August 16th, 1789: Today went well. Pretty average day, we’re running out of food to sell because of the shortage and people are getting upset. I think the flu season hit on top of the shortage too, I’ve seen a few sick people around, I hope I dont get it. Something unexpected happened today, a class C came to us and told us they wanted to give money to class A since they didn’t have nearly enough to support themselves. Of course I gave them some money, I felt bad for the old friend I know in class A because I knew he couldn’t afford food.

August 17th, 1789: The paper this morning was speaking a new virus found in the lower classes, I hope class A is doing okay. Oh and speaking of class A, while I was setting up the shop this morning I saw a few class C take my old friend away, he didn’t look upset so I think they want him in the police force? I really wonder what’s going to happen to him. Shorty after that I saw them setting up a quarantine area just outside the jail, this virus is spreading seriously fast, I hope someone doesn’t give it to me while I’m working. Stock was lower than ever today and theres been no word on the shortage from the king. Ugh that king, he really pisses me off, he sits there all day doing nothing but look proper and smug. When’s he going to start paying attention to us and our problems. The high priest and queen on the other hand? They’re great. I bought the high priest food as a piece offering and support for him. I hope that comes back as good karma later on.

August 18th, 1789: Today was absolutely awful, I’m crying while writing this. This morning we had nothing to sell but a few weapons, the weapon sales got shut down pretty fast so I had no income today. In the papers they said that the virus mutated into a deadly plague and that theres a nation on our borders, ready to invade any day.  I watched someone drop dead while walking home, I was so scared what was going to happen to the rest of the lower classes. Oh and that old friend got promoted again too, which isn’t a terrible thing, I’m proud of him but now he’s part of the kings guard. I had to beg him for medicine after the high priest said I deserved it. I got home and used the medicine almost immediately since I was feeling terrible. I knew the king would never let us get cures, I knew the future would only be worse for me. You can only imagine how glad I was when a soldier from Nation Y, the nation on the borders, invited me to join their “great nation”. Of course I went with him. I needed a new chance. I packed up everything I had and tried to sneak away, Callum had caught me and decided he was going to come with me, along with a class A which we had no clue was following us. While we were leaving we caught word that one of the class C tried to kill the royals. Now I knew she didn’t like them but I had no clue she would actually try to shoot them, I say “try” because she missed her shot and the bullet went straight through my old friends arm, making the arm nearly useless. After we crossed the border, Nation Y trained us to fight and when the time came, Callum was sent to assassinate the royals. That idiot went after my old friend and managed to kill him. I’ll never forgive him for it. After he stabbed him, the king turned around and stabbed Callum in the heart. He dropped to the ground in front of me. Then there I was, standing, facing the king, sword in our hands. He brought his arm up to slash his sword through me, just as he was about to bring his arm down, I saw a sword go through his chest. Someone had killed the king! They saved my sorry life! Once the king dropped to ground, I looked up from his dead body to see who had done it and I saw a kid holding the sword that had ended the king, a kid killed the kind and saved my life. Before I had enough time to process the late kings death, I turned around and saw the class A stabbing the high priest, but again before I could celebrate the royals death from the class A, the queen had brought her ax through his neck. I was the only one left. All the people I loved had died. I’ve run from the battlefield with a cut over my stomach and only half an arm. I had survived but for what? I regret it all. I cannot take this anymore, I do not plan on living past tonight. This will be my last journal entry.

Spring Torture…

I’m. Back and not better than ever. You see, the spring exhibition just happened and so many things went wrong! Buttttt to keep my brain off of that ill just explain the non bad parts

First, the grade 9s assigned us spots to work in and last minute I was assigned to be in the entrance greeters with Landon and Colton to hand out pamphlets and gummy cups while on my break i went around to other groups and places to see what was going on and it was really fun. The first room had LAUNCH which is how all of PLPs projects work. The second room was the loon lake room, they were doing a tableaux on an experience at loon lake (battle archery) they handed out watered down Gatorade too to show people how bad the juice was. The third room was the tech room, they were handing out app cookies and explaining their projects. The last grade 8-9 area was the conclusion where they gave out skittles and led people into the gym where the grade 10-12s were handing out snacks and showing off their projects.
More about my group, the underwhelming entrance crew!! The front greeters were me, Colton, and Landon. We just stood there telling people where to go and what to do while also offering gummies. The people would go through 2 other skits after us and the first one was just a normal boring class with bored and aggravated kids. One of them held a sign saying something like “I wish there was a way to make education more exciting…” then the next skit was a documentary playing with kids excited and surprised with a textbook in the trash.
(If youre confused take a more confusing map:)
So it went something like that yeah^ after about 2 hours of torture it was finally over. The juice in the loon lake room made someone threw up and most people didn’t have any snacks left but other than that nothing went terribly wrong and we cleaned up and went home 🙂

Beavers Were Made Into What??

LOOK AT THIS
Now that I have your attention, I just finished my final project for the year in humanities. The project was about the fur trade in New France and how it impacted the ecosystem and the indigenous people living there. I learnt a lot in this project, I went from not knowing what and where New France was to where it was and how it was involved with everything at the time.
My favourite part of this project was the social experiment game, for the game you’d be split into 4 different groups which were 2 indigenous groups and 2 European groups. We (1 of the 2 indigenous groups) were told to trade with the Europeans with out “beaver pelts”. In the end my group somehow won because we had a lot of the European things and none of the pelts left.
After the simulation was done we went on with the normal classes, making ads and stuff for the final project.
overall It was a fun project and I learnt a lot about Canada’s history, I’d give the unit like a 7/10  if I was rating it.
until next time, goodbye!

Tpol time!

Welcome to my tPOL! Today i’ll be reflecting on my whole grade 8 year and answering the driving question, “Why do you feel like you are ready to advance it the next grade level?”

Overall this year i’ve grown a lot, I’ve met new people and tried new things and here’s my proof
in our first project, medium is the message, I grew a lot in a social aspect since we had to reach out to businesses and talk to them about making an ad for them and also just meet our group members since it was our first project together. A few other projects I grew from socially were Destination imagination and The Outsiders because we had to present to other people (mostly adults/parents)
even though most of the growth from PLP has come from humanities, i’ve also had a few moments in other classes where I realized how much i’ve grown over the year. For example in maker in the Herzog and Carr project, more specifically the herzog part, I grew in my skill with photography and image editing. Another example is in scimatics in the Laser Laws project. I learnt about how light works and I learnt a lot overall in that project.

back to the driving question since that hasn’t been answered yet. I feel like im ready to advance to the next grade because I’ve learnt a lot from this year, I’ve grown as a person and as a student in many ways. Even though I don’t agree with how much homework is given out, its taught me that I need to actually be responsible and do it (which overtime has also incorporated itself into working in groups.) PLP has improved my work ethic since elementary never really gave out homework and the work was definitely easier. So to fully answer the question, yes, I do feel like I’m ready to move on because I’ve noticed and acknowledged my growth as a learner.

3D solar Panel

Another project done, another blog post being made. For this project we made 3d models in Tinkercad and we had to choose if we wanted to make optimal surface area or volume. I chose to make a solar panel with optimal surface area. After we calculated all the parts volume and surface area we put it all into a keynote presentation and presented it to the class

(My keynote⬇️)

I didn’t do good in this project and I think I lost my motivation after my teammate kicked me out of his group 3 days before the presentation. I would have done at least a little better if that didn’t happen.

DI-DONE!

FINALLY THE SWEET SWEET STRESS RELIEF OF DI BEING DONE!
4-5 long, stressful months of planning and prepping for DI. (If you don’t remember what DI is check out my midway DI post) Now if you want to know how it all went well then keep reading
So, it all started in November when we were told what DI was and put into the groups we would be forced to work with until April. Now, I was put into a Fine arts group. It was going great till the first dress rehearsal where we had absolutely NOTHING done. So we started all our work a week after the second dress rehearsal. In 2 weeks we made almost everything, the backdrop, costumes, final script (yes that includes memorizing the script too) so let me get into the process of them!

Backdrop:there was 2 backdrops, one for a juice-bar the other for a dungeon.

Costume transformation: we didn’t come up with what to do for this until a week before the competition so of course it wasn’t gunna be the greatest thing ever, it consider of a rolled up  red cape tied up with string and when it got untied it unrolled into a full cape.

Illusion: we had a door that looked fake but was real so you could push it away and you could crawl through the sheets. It was used in the dungeon scene.

Costumes: Mine was guards armour made out of cardboard, The Queen (Julia) wore a dress from the drama room. The Jester/Bard (Tom) just found an old Halloween costume from his attic, The Old Trickster/Maki (Makai) wore a flannel and jeans with his arm tucked into the shirt sleeve, The Trickster wore a black hoodie and shorts, and The Mute Painter wore some stained and ripped clothes with an apron.

Props: we had a crown that the trickster was trying to steal and my shield (used as a fan at one point lol)

Story: the story starts with the trickster going to the bar and accidentally bumping into a guard, but the whole reason he went to the bar was because he was struggling with money so he took a risky bet with a retired trickster looking for revenge on the queen, the bet was to steal the crown in return for 1,000 shillings so the trickster did exactly that, or at least he tried to… while he was about to leave the bar he ran into the guard from earlier but the queen was with him, the queen demands the jester sing about the trickster to which he does. After the song the queen tells the guard to make her look dramatic (to which he fans her with his shield) then orders the trickster to a year in prison. The guard drags the trickster into the dungeon and leaves. The trickster looks around and sees an old painter painting the wall so he asks what they’re doing and eventually finds out that the painting was a real door so he pushes the door out and somehow gets out of the dungeon like that. Once’s he’s back in the bar he sees the queen there with the guard so he asks the retired trickster to distract them both while he steals the crown off her head. The queen runs off crying while the guard tries to chase after her and the tricksters drink and laugh and so the story ends there.
Heres a video of it:

DI was so stressful but I think I learnt how to prioritize the project and that I should be helping the group. That doesn’t mean I ever wanna do it again though.

What the Hell is an Atom??

Recently I just finished a project on the atomic and kinetic molecular theory. We had to make a game on scratch including the atomic theory. Before you play the game you need to know that before a project we fill out a Mindmap of questions we have for the topic then after the project we answer them so here’s what mine looked like.
Now for the actual game link —> Atoms and stuff quiz
this project was a challenge for me since I’ve never used scratch before and I’ve had no coding experience before. I didn’t really like how stressful this project was but thats probably just me being biased towards coding. I don’t think I did my absolute best with this project but I would definitely try harder if I had to do it again.

Until next my next post (which is in like 20 minutes lol)

A Time of Art- The Renaissance!

Recently PLP 8 did a project on the Renaissance, we started learning about the printing press and the famous paintings from the Renaissance  (like the Mona Lisa, birth of Venus, etc.). We made a Triptik on comparing things made in the Renaissance to modern day versions of the object or person
this is how mine turned out:

The other part of the final product was a paragraph about what you think the most important thing or person was in the Renaissance. I wrote the paragraph on Galileo, a famous astronomer and scientist from the 1600’s. Galileo discovered the 4 biggest moons orbiting Jupiter and the heliocentric theory.
Here’s the paragraph if you were curious about what Galileo did and discovered:

In my opinion Galileo was the most important person in the Renaissance and here’s why. Galileo was most famously known for his astronomical discoveries. In around 1609 he started making telescopes that could see 8-30 times more than a spyglass, shortly after he started using the telescopes to document astrological findings. Galileo discovered many things about the solar system like 4 of Jupiter’s biggest moons (IO, Ganymede, Europa, Callisto), the moons craters, Venus’s phases, Saturns rings, and even the heliocentric theory. The heliocentric theory is the theory that the earth revolves around the sun instead of everything revolves around the earth. The church didn’t like what Galileo discovered. By 1615  the catholic court declared that anything opposing Aristotle’s geocentrism was not true. A few years after the court had declared this, Galileo was brought to Rome and told not to write or teach any of his theories. On January 8th, 1642, Galileo passed away from heart palpitations and fever. By the time he died he was fully blind. Galileos theories really helped modern day astronomers like Stephan hawking to discover more and more about astronomy, and Galileo’s science theories that I didn’t focus on in the paragraph helped science get a boost of new information. Even some of the inventions he made helped society “move up”.

This project was really fun I think I did pretty well with researching all the fun topics and discovering all of the events that occurred

Loon Lake Learning..Advance?

A few weeks ago PLP 8 and 9 went on a field trip to loon lake in maple ridge. We were told to fill out a journal every day to reflect on the trip with what we did and then to add it too an eBook.

Learning Advance 2022

some things I didn’t add in the journal:
Naomi getting possessed on the ritual bed
Strangely coloured lemonade
Weird looking knight chess piece
Breakfast day 2
Vibrant tree branch

Overall I think the loon lake learning advance was really fun and I really liked it there, even though it was hard to communicate to people that didn’t go with us and I didn’t exactly get to sleep in the same room as the people I wanted, I still found it really fun and I learnt a lot (and worked on DI). I definitely hope I go on more PLP trips in the future

Look Alive! It’s DI!

So the PLP teachers told us we would be participating in a world wide competition of creativity named “Destination Imagination” or “DI” for short. We were put into 4 groups based on what subject we wanted to do. Fine arts, Science, Improv, technical. I was put into a fine arts group with Luca, Julia, Tom, Judah, and Kai. The other grade 8 fine arts team split up so Makai was added to our group. We have a pretty good group, we all have our different strengths in instant challenges. In one of the most recent instant challenge practice we had to make a bridge between chairs with a few resources. We did pretty good on that with Judas quick thinking. For the next one we had to make a tower to hold up a pingpong ball, a gold ball, and a marble. Luca and Judah constructed it while me, Julia, and Tom helped come up with ways to put it together while Kai asked how much time we had left. For the second last challenge we had to make a way to get the pingpong ball from the ground, to the chair, to the table, to the other side of the table. Me and Judah put it together while we were being told what would work and how we should put it together. For the final challenge we had to tell the tale of the things we just made. Toms improv ability helped us with how we should act out what we should do. So he thought we get into pairs and tell the tale of one of the challenges. Me and Kai told the bridge chair story while Judah and Luca told the elevator story and Tom and Julia told the tower story.
sadly i have no photos to show what the solutions looked like but maybe my teammates do! Go check them out too. Until next time!
