Causeulation

Recently in our combined math and science classes we have been working on a really interesting, mainly math project. In his project we learned all about causation, correlation, and the differences between them. We got to present our learning to our class in any way that we could all see at once.

To begin this project we had to do lots of practice and lessons in our unit book so we could understandthe difference between correlation and causation. In our books, getting the concept was relatively easy for me but understanding the actual information on the graph and how it compared to the other information was the difficult part. To help the class understand this, our teacher Mr. Gross showed real life examples and we had to determine if it was a causation or correlation with his help. That activity really helped me and I was ready to move on to the actual project. If you don’t know what the difference that okay, I’ll explain. Correlation in a graph is a random coincidence where two stats have the same trends but, are unrelated. Causation on the other hand is two stats that have closely similar results because one stat directly impacts the other one.

An example of correlation without causation

For the project we had to pair up with someone who we thought we would work well with. Me and Luca OG chose each other because we live nearby and we work good together. We decided to do our project in keynote form so we could do a live oral presentation in front of our class. We thought this would be a strong strategy to take because we are both comfortable with public speaking. We also decided to incorporate magic move which is a somewhat new feature I keynote that gives it sharper and cleaner transitions.

The keynote app

One of the interesting things that we decided to do for our project is make one of our own graphs and use it as an example of causation in our keynote. We got information on our topic online from a reputable site and made our own graph out of it in numbers. This was a really interesting process and it was easier than I thought it was.

In reflection, this was a really fun unit for a topic that lots of people might find uninteresting or boring. The way we got to have the information and make a project out of it in any way we want wether it’s a video, keynote or game. One things that I would do differently for next time is know how to use keynote better and utilize its full potential. Looking back I see how we could have used magic move in a completely different and unique way and I wish we did this.
