👋 Hiya Everyone!

We’re back again for TPoLs, wow this was a fast year. Today I will be once again speaking about my growth as a learner for 7ish minutes. I somehow remembered the declaration which I guess has been stamped into my mind permanently. Anyways, let’s get started.

📜 Declaration

“Thank you for coming to my presentation of learning. I am the expert on my own learning. I am also responsible and accountable for my own learning. You can expect me to give an honest evaluation of my progress. We will discuss my strengths and opportunities for growth. Thank you in advance for listening and for offering feedback that I can use to improve as a learner.”

🌎 Humanities

This year we have had a total of six projects. The Outsiders (no blog post), Power Play, Radical Innovations, Exploration, Consequences of Colonization, and the Medium is the Message.

The one I enjoyed the most I think was the Medium is the Message. As someone who’s interested in Graphic Design and Marketing, I felt like this project was perfect for me. I enjoyed it a lot, especially since our first Field Study was tied into it more on that later. The first keystone being a advertising survey, the second (my favourite) being a chart where we would pick advertisements to examine. I picked 4 Apple ads and 2 from Nothing. Here’s some of the ads I chose.

Yeah that was quite enjoyable. I learned so much about advertising & graphic design from the project, and a lot about Oregon from our time there. For my first field study, I enjoyed it. I think that’s because I knew a lot of people which allowed me to be more flexible and more comfortable, sure there were some bumps. But in the end I enjoyed the trip, so far to my knowledge it holds true that no student has ever regretted going to Oregon.

One thing I definitely need to speak about is the video from Consequences of Colonization. I think it was much better then my voice note from the outsiders which was not very good, in it I spoke very quietly, stuttered, and spoke in a very nervous tone. I spoke in a more casual tone which was good because it means I was more comfortable with speaking. Though I think I still have to do more practice, I’m getting there.

🧪 Science

We’ve had 3 science projects. Small but Mighty, Mind over Matter, and Journey to the Centre of the Earth (no blog post yet). My favourite project which I also found the most challenging was Mind over Matter. Making the game was super fun, I also love whenever I have the opportunity to use my programming knowledge in projects. Instead of using Scratch I used a website called GDevelop, it’s sort of similar to scratch but it’s very similar to a programming language I know called LUA so I chose that since it offered a large library of assets I could use to create my game.

For my final game, I wasn’t proud of it. I’d say it was more of a test build / beta version. Since though it had the general idea it was buggy and not super high quality. If I had more time I definitely would’ve made it less buggy and the code would’ve been more organized though that wouldn’t effect gameplay. In the end I enjoyed the project though.

📋 My Personal Growth Plan

Speaking about my Goals

Prior to my MPoL:

After my MPoL:

At my MPoL, I spoke about improving my communication skills. Which I think I have improved quite a bit since the beginning of the year, since after 10 months of school I now know most people in PLP 8 and I’m much more comfortable when communicating to group members. I would say my problem solving skills have improved, but I want to do more work on those.

One new goal I have for next year is creating work that’s more me. I want to create work that reflects more on my personality and how I do things. I want to push myself out of my comfort zone and experiment with different ways to create my products.

My Grade Goals for my PLP Classes

Prior to my MPoL, my grade goal was to achieve “Extending” in Maker and “Accomplished” in Humanities & Science by the end of this year. I have the grade goal of “Extending” in Humanities & Maker. However, I’m not entirely sure if I want to go for “Extending” in Science since like the flexibility i have of not aiming for extending each time. I will think about it over the break, but I am leaning towards going for it.

📊 How could I grow as a Learner?

I think I could develop a better system when working at home. Recently I have found myself procrastinating when I want to work. I’m going to experiment with a system we used in science over the break when doing some coding projects. What we did was work for 25 minutes and take a 5 minute break, and I will customize it for me so my workflow is more efficient.

🏁 Conclusion

This was an interesting school year, to say the least. I learned a lot about myself. I think I’m ready to advance to Grade 9. Everything I have done this year, from improving my communication skills to problem solving to conflict resolution and everything else, has allowed me to be able to advance to grade 9. Thank you for listening and I am always willing to have an open conversation about my learning.
