In 1896, Prime Minister Wilfrid Laurier’s liberal government decided to take a new approach to immigration. Cliford Sifton, minister of the interior in Laurier’s government, introduced an “Open Door” policy to new immigrants. Families from USA, Britain, and other parts of Europe flooded into Canada’s prairies to start farms. But, why did so many people come into Canada?
The term “Canada, The Last Best West” was stamped onto every flyer, newspaper, and billboard across Europe and the United States. Many interesting advertising techniques were used to bring people into Canada, and along with this slogan, thousands of famalies flocked to the prairies to start farming. What was so important about this slogan, and what advertising techniques were used?
In the audio-visual above, I created a retro-style radio broadcast informing the viewers about “Canada, The Last Best West”. I recorded my audio into my computer, and used a program called Audacity. In this program I altered the frequency to sound like an old radio.
