A Breath of the Wilderness

For the last few months, in humanities we have been doing a project called “The Wilderness Must Be Explored”. The project’s 🏎️ Driving Question🏎️ is “How does language inspire adventure?”

This is a very special project, as we went on a week long field study to Oregon to learn more about it! We also got the opportunity to demonstrate our learning to our parents at the spring exhibition!

In class, and on the Oregon Field Study, we have been learning how persuasion works in different types of texts. We have also got to visit some amazing places and talk to people to learn more about how language all around us (not just words on a page!) has an impact on our decisions.

This project involved researching, designing, and creating text (words, images, and videos) that inspire people to head outside and adventure. To understand persuasion, we will be diving deep into the world of advertising and learn how to create persuasive and convincing ads.

At the start of this project, I would never had guessed that I would be creating an entire media/advertising campaign!

My Group

Creating an entire media campaign! It was an enormous amount of work to do! Luckily, I had an amazing group to work with! Please feel welcome to check out my group members’ blogs!

Learning

Before we could get to the fun part, as in going to Oregon and creating a bunch of awesome ads, we had to learn about what advertising really is and how to make quality ads.

Graphic design

We learned about graphic design principles such as hierarchy, contrast, alignment, and repetition to make our ads visually appealing and effective. We also studied how colour, typography, and imagery work together to convey a message and capture the audience’s attention. One of the best ways to learn about design is to see a bad and good sample next to each other. For example:

As you can see, if two colours are too similar, (have little contrast) it can cause some big problems.

Oregon:

While I was in Oregon, I got to write a book all about my time in Oregon. Here is how it turned out!

Creativity

Putting all our learning into practice, we brainstormed creative ideas for our ads that would resonate with our audience and inspire them to embark on their own adventures. We collaborated with our peers, shared feedback, and refined our concepts to produce impactful and memorable advertisements. Here are some photos of the ads and products that we created.

Presentation

Finally, we had all of the ads ready to effectively communicate our ideas and showcase our work at the spring exhibition. We crafted ads, designed shirts, created stickers, and practiced our delivery to convince our parents and peers to take a trip to Oregon; we were prepared to present! The spring exhibition went excellently, and I think my group and I did really well! Here are some photos of how it turned out!

The Driving Question

This project’s driving question was “How does language inspire adventure?” Through my exploration of persuasive language in the creation of advertisements, I have learned all about the power of words and visuals to inspiring people to seek out new experiences and embrace the spirit of adventure. My journey in this project has not only showed me all about the art of persuasion, but has also ignited a sense of curiosity and a desire to explore the world around me. As I reflect on my experiences and share my work with others, I hope to inspire a sense of wonder in those around me, so I encourage you all to embark on your own adventures and discover the beauty of the wilderness.

Core Competency: Communication

This project’s core competency was communication, and in particular, using language to communicate ideas in the form of media and advertising.  I worked hard to enhance my written and visual communication abilities to effectively convey messages and persuade audiences through advertising. I am proud of my progress and the work I produced in this project.

Thanks for Reading!

Overall, this project was an exciting time of discovery, creativity, and collaboration. I have learned about the process of creating and developing an ad campaign, and I am truly grateful for this experience and the opportunity to explore language in such a hands-on and engaging way.
