In this educational report I will be reporting on Jean Talons role in the development of New France, historical information on him and his biography. I will also be writing about his lasting legacy in Canada today.
The role of Jean Talon in New France, Jean lived in New France from 1665 to 1672 and he did many positive things to get him the role of Intendant. One thing he did was encourage people and to increase the population, he seceded in thus bringing in fifteen hundred people and persuading five hundred soldiers to stay after they were going to return to France after completing their mission. Jean also created the idea of French women moving to New France to marry and have children, this was a very successful idea called the “filles du roi”, Over one thousand women came over from France. Talon also tried to make New France self-sufficient by creating businesses and jobs and encouraging others to trade more stuff than just fur.
Jean Talon was born in France on January eighth sixteen twenty six. After his employment in a commissariat his ability became apparent and was promoted. He was appointed the Intendant of New France in sixteen sixty five. Jean Talon was born into an already powerful family so his journey to power was smooth and easy.
The legacy that Talon left behind is apparent, he is known for being an industrial entrepreneur and the originator of the family allowance (filles du roi) He was also known for his royal administrative and legal framework. Not everything Jean Talon did though was successful, in New France Jean Talon’s industries, commercial agriculture and trade with the West Indies failed, for three years there was no intendant and the Crown would no longer invest large sums of money in colonial development.
In conclusion Jean Talon succeeded greatly in his job of being an Intendant of New France. He tried many entrepreneurial and new things, some not succeeding, but some were extremely important and positive like creating the idea of having women come overto New France to make family’s and populate the land. Without Jean Talon, who knows what present day Canada would be like, worse or better we will never know.
