Some call me an artist of film, forever pursing true film… aYeah I made a short Thriller.

A big focus we have had this semester for Maker has been using film. It started in Alberta with the 3 videos we had to make, and it has now evolved to us making Thrillers. A big part of the Thriller was portraying emotions and thoughts on the screen. My group and I decided that we were going to do a silent film. This removed the need to have crystal clear audio from the same video, but it added some challenges. Dialogue in movies is one of the key ways of figuring out what is happening in the film, and without it, it gets difficult.

Facial Expressions

A big system of portraying emotions is through facial expressions. When you’re talking to someone it’s pretty easy to have an idea of what they are thinking just from their facial expressions. When it’s on a screen it can get a bit more difficult. We used very exaggerated facial expressions, along with body gestures to give a better view into the character’s head.

Filming/Audio

A big area I improved upon was filming. Needing to capture expressions, have different angles like a closeup, mid-shot, and establishing while keeping it within a 2 minute time constraint was difficult. Along with the filming part of this project, I had to worry about audio. We didn’t us the original audio because we couldn’t always have a perfect place for audio where we need to film, and sometimes we needed the audio much louder.

Editing

This was the most difficult editing process I have done yet. having to not only add and the clips and do transitions, I also had to do credits, match up audio, and adjust the videos and audio.

What would I do differently next time?

The next time I do a project like this I am going to want to get the editing done quicker so we can have multiple rounds of critique within our group. Having this means there wouldn’t be any dumb mistakes like an audio no matching, a shot being to shaky, or anything else like that.
