13: tPOL 2k23

{Thank you for coming to my presentation of learning. I am the expert on my own learning. I am also responsible and accountable for my own learning. You can expect me to give an honest evaluation of my progress. We will discuss my strengths and opportunities for growth. Thank you in advance for listening and for offering feedback that I can use to improve as a learner}

Wassup, it’s Nikan the man. Welcome to my transitional presentation of learning. Today, I will be reflecting on my first 922 hours in the PLP program here at Seycove secondary school. Let’s get into it.

I’m gonna start at the end with the 2023 spring exhibition. To kickoff this journey, we headed south of the 49th into the US, down to Oregon- which I’ll get into later. The 8s project was called “The Medium is the message”, and we focused on advertising. During our trip, we visited many businesses, which we were each assigned to. Me, Charlie, Quin, Bobby, Lucas, and Baz were assigned to Clark’s Restaurant. Clark’s is a teensy little restaurant in an ever teensier city called Cosmopolis, Washington. We were then to make an ad for this business.

I was very excited for this project, because I LOVE graphic design. I *cough cough* may or may not run a Canucks news account on instagram, so I’m familiar with graphic design, and have spent many hours tinkering on Canva.

A Canva design i made. We won this game.

My ad went through many drafts, but eventually, I got something I was proud of.

My ad was very different from everyone else’s in my group, but it wasn’t always like that. My first 3 drafts were identical to my peers, but then Ms. Willemse gave me some tips that I wasn’t able to implement. I just couldn’t get it to look good, so I did what a hockey team does when they’re bad. That’s right, they blow everything up, fire everyone, and trade everyone. That’s what I did. Unfortunately, I couldn’t actually fire people, but I completely started from scratch. I decided to take a massive risk- which isn’t something I normally do. I waltzed up to Ms. Willemse with a photo of Andy Warhol’s Campbell’s soup artwork as inspiration, and she told me to go for it. So I did.

I received extremely nice words from the exhibition-goers, and overall, Success!

✨Oregon✨

The Oregon trip was our first big trip. I’ll admit, it was daunting. Crossing the border with a bunch of delinquent children didn’t sound appealing, and considering I’m not a fan of travelling, I was overwhelmed.

During the course of this trip, we were forced to work as a team. In my opinion, the best example of this was our quest groups. I’m gonna be honest with you, my group lacked some… uhh… brains…, but, TEAMWORK! Every so often, we would be given a quest, which was usually something like a scavenger hunt. Our group placed last place I’m almost all of them, but that taught me something. I found that there was 2-3 main people orchestrating us, while the rest of us goofed around- we were bound to fail. A team will not succeed unless everyone does something. A Chain is As Strong As The Weakest Link.

I think a team of 15 mediocre, yet team-focused people would outperform a group of 15 ego driven individuals 9 out of 10 times.

A good example of this is the 1992 men’s basketball Olympic team, nicknamed the “Dream Team”. This team was stacked, all but one player became a hall-of-fame-er. Before the olympics, they played a college team, kinda as a warmup. This was the team’s first game together, and it showed. They played like individuals, didn’t pass, and were driven by their egos. They lost 62-54. Against a college team.

The dream team realized “oh snap this wont work.”, so they switched up. They went undefeated in the tournament, and won gold.

A project that I expressed lots of creativity was my science video game. I always love using my imagination, and just by the name of my game, you can assume I did. “Steve Pineapple and the missing atom”. I created all of the sprites myself, and all the dialogue. I really like the game I made because, while being simple, I think its kinda fun to play. This was definitely one of my favourite projects of the year. Science was fun.

Same with our European Exploration project back in march, which feels like eons ago. We were to write a book as a European explorer, and I picked George Vancouver. I’m glad I did, because everyone else did one of 3 people, in which I do not remember. Making the book was fun, and I think I implemented my creativity into it, with drawings.

Next year, I will be sure to be more organized. I found myself multiple times this year finishing work, only to forget to submit it. There are so many ways this could’ve been prevented, but, I didn’t use them me. I’ve dealt with this since kindergarten. Too bad for me.

In my last tPOL, I spoke about rushing, and how much of a problem it was for me. I think I’ve fixed this. I’ve been taking more time, in order to produce higher quality work. I think I’ve also been more confident in my work since my mPOL.

Overall, I’d like to think I’m ready for grade 9. I think grade 8 was a good toe-dip, and I think I’ll feel fully immersed into the program and Seycove in general next year.

But one thing in for certain, the shenanigans will increase 😈 (this was a joke).

Thank you for reading/listening my mPOL. I believe I have given an honest reflection on my learning. For the rest of my time in PLP, I want to insure I produce quality work while improving my organization. I’m wildly excited for grade 9, and progressing through PLP.

And until next time- Nikan out!

  1. Hi Nikan the goat/Man. I thoroughly enjoyed this masterpiece of writing. I have printed it and hung it on my wall. I will wake every morning to see it, and every morning from now on I will cry when I wake. You Have restored my faith in god.
