In this post we are going to be talking about a few ideas that are being talking about in my classes right now. The topics I will be talking about is how government in formed and elected and how this works in a democracy. Naturally we had to write a post about this and of course I want mine to be interesting, so I thought about how I could represent our government and also include what my opinions on it are. If you are able to understand this blog post I hope you enjoy it.
Based on the title you already know that the comparison I am using is a pirate ship. Now before I start on how our government is equivalent to a pirate ship, I have to show the drawing that this is all based off of. Hopefully then you might understand I little more about what I mean.
As you can see there is a lot happening in this picture, so I’ll start from the top down. It all starts with the captain who is ultimately in charge of the ship, as you can guess he is the same role as the prime minister. Moving down we have 2 and 3 mate who represent the prime ministers cabinet as they are closest to the leader. After them comes the other 338 members of parliament who help the prime minister make important decisions. In the drawing they are known as veteran crew members.
After them come citizens or regular crew members. I have also divided the ship into sections and labeled them based on level of government. The area where the captain is located is the federal government, in the ship is the provincial government. I have decided to put them there because they deal with matters that are a bit lower than federal, but still crucial in a functioning government. For municipal I have a above average size crewmen, which shows that they are more local and work with the people to make smaller decisions.
One other thing I want to add is that I have put the Governor General as a ship communicator in the crows nest. This shows how they are part of the ship but not as connected to everyone else. The reason I have the as a communicator is because they are the communication between us and the monarchy. In addition we have the lieutenant governors as monkeys, but I’ll get back to that later.
Below I am also including a second picture explaining how democracy on a pirate ship would work. Fist of all a pirate ship does function democratically as they vote on who should be the leader of the ship based on characteristics. The image below shows how a new leader might be elected. Of course this is only an idea of how it would work, I myself have never been a pirate so I have no first hand knowledge.
Now that I have explained how the image works I want to wrap up this post with the question that everyone is thinking right now. Why are there monkeys. Why are their monkeys in our government. What I am trying to get at right now is why do we have monarchy representatives at provincial level. I have been wondering this for a bit now and this seemed the a good time to bring it up.
For those who don’t know the lieutenant governor the head of each province meaning they hold the highest rank for each province. They represent the queen and before Bills that have passed legislature can become laws they have to be given the Royal Assent by the lieutenant governor. I don’t understand why we need approval to pass bills for things like provincial natural resources, and municipalities.
I understand having at least some representation of the queen in Canada, so the Governor General makes sense as a position because they are dealing with major decisions that impact all of Canada, but having many smaller representations does not make much sense. I look up the Royal Assent as well, and to me it seems like it’s more of a formality than a necessary requirement for bills.
The last reason I think this is because of some I realized when drawing the pirate ship image, government is complicated. I know my picture is not that complicated and that’s because I grouped together different sections of government like MP and Provincial, there are many different jobs within those categories. Overall what I am trying to say is why make it more complicated than it already is right now.
Anyway that concludes this post, I hope I was able to explain why I think the monkeys are unnecessary on our Canadian ship. Also I have nothing against the Lieutenant General, I have just wondered what their position means since we started talking about Canada’s government.
