Everything you need to know to become a hockey player
If you want to join me as a hockey player, here is a list of things to do to get started. (Note: It’s easier to start at a young age.)
- First, you’re going to need equipment. Here is a list of equipment for a skater. (Goalie’s equipment will be different.)
-
- Jock strap
- Shin pads (x2)
- Hockey socks (x2)
- Hockey pants
- Skates (x2) (Make sure they’re sharp.)
- Shoulder pads
- Elbow pads (x2)
- Neck guard
- Jersey
- Helmet
- Gloves (x2)
- Stick (Size: Goes up to your nose when standing flat.) (Taped on the top and on the blade.) (Sticks curve left and right. Make sure you have the right direction for you.)
- Hockey water bottle
-
- Find a league near you that you can join.
- Learn about the positions and rules. Decide if you want to be a goalie, a defender, or a forward. Make sure you know the penalties, icings, and off sides. Depending on age, gender, and the league, there can be some different rules. Make sure you know the rules for your league.
- Here is a diagram I made to show where to line up at a face off at Center ice. 1 is the Center man, 2 are the wingers, 3 are the defence men, and 4 is the goalie.
- PRACTICE!! Some leagues have ice time to practice with coaches and stuff, but some don’t. Even if yours does, you should try to find some time to practice at a public skate. Practice skating, shooting, passing, and stick handling.
8 things you didn’t know about hockey:
Here is a list of interesting acts that I bet you didn’t know about hockey.
1. The first pucks were made of something that would surprise anyone; cow manure.
2. If an NHL team’s goalie and backup goalie are injured, they can take a fan to play for them in a game. In 2020, the Carolina Hurricanes had a fan in net, and they won!
3. The name hockey comes from the French word hoquet, which means shepherd’s stick.
4. For the first ten years of the NHL, players were not allowed to pass forwards, just like in rugby.
5. The most goals scored in one NHL game is 21. In 1985, the Edmonton Oilers beat the Chicago Blackhawks 12-9.
6. The longest NHL game ever was 2 hours 56 minutes and 30 second long. This time is only counting play time and not the breaks in between every period and every overtime section.
7. The oldest person known to play hockey was 98 years old.
8. 80% of Canada watched the final game for the men’s hockey in the 2010 olympics.
Reflection
The blogging process could have gone better. It started on the first day because I was struggling to chose my topic. It seemed to go pretty smoothly from there, until I got sick. I was lying in bed for 60% of this blog. Only having Basecamp made some aspects of this harder, especially the peer feedback stage which I kind of did with my mom.
This was different from other blogs I’ve done because I got to choose the topic. One reason I chose hockey is my audience. There were some other topics I had in mind, but I didn’t use them because of my audience. If I had used one of those ideas, it would have felt like my audience was drastically different, but with hockey, not really.
I enjoyed creating this page because it gave me something to do while I was lying in bed sick instead of just watching YouTube (YouTube can get pretty boring after hours of daily usage).
While writing this blog, I realized I didn’t know as much about hockey as I thought.
The hardest part was probably getting my ideas together and getting started and the easiest part was the research.
I probably won’t continue to boat on this page just because I don’t usually have much time.
