Recently we finished up our unit 3 math project on Systems of Equations. This project was focused on the comparison between data using a linear equation graph. specifically, comparing phone plans. This was done as a presentation in front of the whole class.
We didn’t have to just compare phone plans, we could also compare animal handling charges or the price of shoes. This made for some interesting and creative projects. The project also had requirements. Below is an outline as to how our teacher marked our projects:
For my project, I worked with my classmate Ethan. We decided to focus our project on the comparison of phone plans that have a minimum of 8 GB’s included in the plan. We looked at plans from Virgin Mobile, Koodo, and Costco Virgin Mobile. We were looking for the plan that would be the cheapest for going over the data limit because Ethan and I are both susceptible to going over our plan limits and neither of us have much money to cover the extra fees when this happens.
Once we figured out the cost to data ratio of each plan, we created a linear graph to show our findings.
We then needed to present our findings to our class. To do this we used Keynote, a presentation App. Keynote is a good App because it enables you to make really good slide shows and its easy to use. During our presentation, we used our core competency skills (Communication, Thinking, and Social Skills). Most specifically, we used our communication skills. We’ve been using and practicing these specific skills over the entire school year. In our presentation, we showed the comparisons of plans then we concluded that the Virgin Mobile plan was our best choice because it would give us a decent amount of data for the lowest cost.
What I liked about this project was that tit enabled me to practise my presentation skills and core competencies and it helped me to understand how I could apply linear graphs to something, like mobile phone plan selection, that was of real interest to me.
