For this unit we were working on civilizations. After learning a bit about Rome we were tasked with creating our own civilization. We were working in groups of 4 or 5. At the end of the unit we had to make a quilt that tells the story of our civilization and its hero.

The first part of the process was answering the basic who, what, when, why questions about our civilization. This went by pretty quick as it wasn’t that hard to brain storm stuff for that. However, when we scrolled down the page we had to do our civilizations worldview. This took a bit longer because it was a bit more in-depth and answered more questions that describe our civilization.

The next step was creating our hero’s journey. This again wasn’t the hardest sheet as the questions were very detailed so it made it easy to find answers. As a group we figured out the basis of the story pretty quickly and put it down.

The final step before actually quilting was the storyboard of the quest. The storyboard we had was a sheet that asked us to define the exposition, the rising action, the climax, the falling action, and the conclusion. A story board isn’t a very detailed thing. However my group didn’t realize that so our storyboard was huge. So, we got sent back and got told to simplify, also known as chuck some stuff out the window! Ms. Willemse also rejected us for making our hero Channing Tatum.

Having finished our story board it was time to start designing our squares for the quilt. Art definitely isn’t my strong point so you can read about how challenging this step was for me in this Other post

We also had to pick a background colour for the quilt itself. We forgot to talk about that in my group so when we were watching the empire strikes back at the school I had to pick a colour. I picked black because most of the quilt squares are quite dark and bland so I thought black would merge with that nicely.

We have now actually started the quilting process of the project. Still not easy. However I got a time-lapse of my “amazing” sewing skill (Note how many times I have to re-thread my needle).
