Hey everyone,
Fore the past 4 weeks I have made 6 different videos all on different past topics that include nationalism, and it has been the most work I have done for school in such a short amount of time in well, ever. I am going to take you through some of the things we did over the past weeks and show you what helped me learn the most about nationalism. As always we were working toward answering one question, for this project the question was How Can a Understanding of Nationalism Help us Understand Today? My class and I answered this question through 10 milestones and 6 videos and I’ll do my best to explain what answer I came up with and how I improved with each video.
We didn’t just jump right into making a video we started with learning about all the different types of videos and how to make them to the best of our abilities. The video genres we learned about were
audience: people interested in view of certain topics
Purpose of video:telling a story from a persons point of view.
Audience: film makers and people interested in the process of filming
Purpose of video: to layout scenes and movement in a movie of video
Audience: depend on content, interested people, learners
Purpose of type of video: to explain how to make or do something
Audience: learners, depends on documentary
Purpose of type of video: to inform, persuade
Audience: learners, teachers
Purpose of type of video: informative, educate
Audience: kids, people who like watching reaction
Purpose of type of video: entertainment, to see get opinions on certain
Those are all the videos we were planning on making although we didn’t end up doing all of them.
Parent interview
The first video I was assigned to make was an interview of a parent, I was supposed to interview my mom or dad about nationalism. The first thing I did to prepare for the interview was choose my interviewee (I chose my mom.) then I started coming up with questions about the topic. Then finally I started to film my mom answering the questions I came up with, and lastly I edited and posted it to YouTube here it is if you would like to watch it.
In the interview I am really proud of the set (lighting, angles, sound quality) and I am happy with the editing of the final copy.
Nationalism around the world
This next topic was about nationalism like the interview but this video was about a certain place in the world. The options for the place we would make our video about were, The Crimean War, Italian nationalism, Indian Nationalism, German nationalism, and lastly American nationalism. We did a short activity in class to learn about each place and what type of nationalism was there at the time. After I looked at each place in the world I chose to make my video about Italian nationalism, I’m not exactly sure why I chose Italy but it seemed like an interesting place to learn more about.
Animatic
this video was fun but hard at the same time because I had to draw an entire story and make it look neat enough be understandable. In this video I had to include examples of continuity and change in the time of Italian unification. My video ended up looking good enough for someone to understand what was going on in the story, but the drawings are definitely not my best work. Over a while of planning my video I came up with the idea of travelling through a book while telling the story and explaining the facts of Italian Nationalism.
This video is not one that I am super proud of because the sound is a little quiet and it just doesn’t look like I tried as hard as I did. But I did work pretty hard on it so I am happy that I did the work and and finished with something resembling a animatic.
Nationalism in BNA
This next topic I worked was in my opinion the hardest one to make a video of because we had to make a tutorial video of How To Make Canadian Confederation, That is a really hard thing to make a how to on. While I was designing and planning my video I decided to make a makeup tutorial to represent Canadian Confederation, but I like to make life difficult for myself so I decided to make a tutorial of how to do makeup on a map. It took many days of planning and revising ideas to come to that final idea but I eventually made it work. When I eventually needed to start filming I had to make props for the video.
Map of canada made of cardboard
Paint and markers to represent makeup
Paper cutouts of the colonies in Canada in the 1800s
An empty wall
It was easy to get most of these things the only thing that was pretty hard was to cut out the shape of canada on cardboard. Once I got all the props I started to film, like any other makeup tutorial I filmed all the different steps to a makeup look the only difference was it wasn’t actually makeup and I did it on cardboard not a face.
I ended up super happy with the voiceover, lighting, and overall set the only thing I wasn’t happy with and think I could improve significantly on was the intro and outro sound quality. Science I didn’t have a mic with me at the time I just recorded the video while trying to be as loud as possible but the sound was still pretty quiet because I was far away from the camera I was filming with. Next time I have this problem I will probably have another device near me and use voice memos to record just the sound as I am recording visuals.
Oppression in Canada
this topic was one that I actually enjoyed learning about because I have always wanted to know more about things like oppression because most people don’t like talking about the struggles people went through but I think it is super important to learn about and acknowledge that it did happen. we had 2 topics to choose from, The Indian Act or Louis Riel and Red River
I chose the Indian act because I know more about it from past lessons and classes and I like learning about that topic better. I didn’t finish this video fully I just did a voice over and a couple animations but I was ok with that cause it still explained the story and what I learned.
If you want to listen to it here it is
As a class we did many little activities to help us learn but one that I really enjoyed and had fun with was a debate about weather Louis Riel’s death was justified.
Cumulative video
This video was like a choose your own adventure video the only requirement was to include what I learned and accurate information. Also in this video I got to choose if I wanted to do it in a partnership of individual and I chose with a partner because I have always liked group work a little better and it’s fun to film with a friend. My partner was Amy go check out her blog to see what she though of the project as well. We decided to make a gameshow to show examples from our learning and I had so much fun making it.

I think the video ended up super good and I love all the scenes.
Final video
The last video I made was to show mine and Amy’s learning and to answer the driving question, but to make sure that it does do that and its engaging I had to make a reaction video with my interviewee from the interview about nationalism. This video didn’t take as long as the other ones but it was definitely one of the hardest because you only had one shot to get the true reaction.
I am so glad that my mom learned from the video and that she was also pretty entertained.
I really hope you enjoyed my learning journey through making those 6 videos and that the videos are entertaining to watch here is my final answer that I came up with An understanding of nationalistic acts throughout history can help us understand how nationalism effects us today and how those acts will influence us in the future. Thanks for reading through this beautiful post.
Hi Ryan,
I read your post and it’s pretty impressive. I liked how you labeled each paragraph and how you separated the paragraphs from the different types of nationalities with videos and pictures. I think you did a great job!
Hi Mateo King,
I’m really glad that you liked my post and that you actually read to the end of it! thanks for the comment.
