Politics, the one subject you don’t ask strangers about. Before this project, I didn’t know anything about the structure of the Canadian government and had little interest in the Canadian government as a whole. I believe that this government change my perspective on politics as a whole and helped me to have a more complete understanding.
Government Structure Quiz:
The structure of Canadian government was not as complex as a though. I always thought that our government worked liked American government but just had different names for positions. However, that is very much not the case.
I believe that I have a proficient understanding of Canadian government. I think my understanding of Canadian government grew especially since I was in charge of explaining it in the video portion of our presentation. However, I think to improve this skill in the future I have to use what I learned to keep up with current Canadian politics.
Lord of the flies:
We were tasked to read Lord of the flies to have a better understanding of how governments are formed and executed. The book is centred around British school children who are stranded on a island and are forced to survive. This book is full of symbolism and we were also tasked with creating notes for a democratic seminar in which we discussed the book.
I think I did a really great job understanding the themes and the message of this book. Before the seminar I took a lot of notes on while reading the book and watched a lot of videos on other peoples perspectives on the book. This helped me have meaningful and deep conversation during the democratic seminar. I’m overall really happy with the work I did preparing for the democratic seminar and my sophisticated understanding of this book.
Group Worked:
We were tasked with creating a presentation on why the Canadian government is important for young people. This was the final product for this project and we had to make convincing argument to young people for why they should vote.
Our group was not the best group I have been in but also not the worst. I contributed mainly to creating half of the video through explaining Canadian government, why you should do your own research and what the having the confidence of the house means animations, which you can see bellow.
I also helped with the keynote animations, the information on the keynote and was a presenter plus changing for the actual prevention presentation. I’m honestly very proud of my work for the video, I think I did a very good job explaining the Canadian government. However, one thing that I need to work on is being more authoritative. The super cool group member who was the main leader in our project, Teva, unfortunately, got sick few days before presentation. This kind made me the new leader as second in command. However, I have a lot of difficulties telling people what they should be doing and forcing people to do their work which I think made our final result less good than it could been. Additionally, I should been more proactive in practicing our presentation. We had a lot of scheduling difficulties for what time everybody would be available to run through the presentation and we were only able to go through our presentation 3 times, only once with the TV before the real presentation. Furthermore, I need work on become more harsh and proactive in my future group projects.
Why does this project matter:
Now, the answer to the question why should you bother with voting? Does it actually make a difference? In my opinion, it does, because governments and parties to an extent affect most aspects of our daily lives. The reason we are able to have the freedom and rights or the unjust laws and the restraint that we do, is all due to government. Additionally, it affect healthcare, which laws are passed, which laws are enforced, education, tax and so much more. Having a bad government can damage a society and its people, as we see in the book, Lord of the Flies. In order to have policies that align with your beliefs seen in your country, voting is the only way to achieve that, or you’d have to become part of government yourself. Even if you don’t think your vote matters, just couple vote can change which party or person is in charge and in-turn, how the country will now be run. Additionally, voting creates a government which are accountable and have MPs who are elected from different demographics, which can help keep the government accountable. If only the same people types of people vote for the same party than we would have a government with no accountability. Moreover, things are always changing and we the young peeps are I feel the most aware of that. That’s why its important to have MPs in government who care about what young people have to say and are making decisions in The House of Commons with the future generation in mind.
I hope this convinced you somewhat to vote in the upcoming election, I know I will after this project.
