How might we learn and experience the creative process while developing our creativity, curiosity and courage?

Introduction:

Destination Imagination was very challenging this year however, I feel as if we did a decent job in the end compared to last year Destination Imagination. This year I participated in the scientific challenge in DI, in this team my fellow group members were Faith, Fraser, Cale and Zach. In this project we had to utilize all our talents to create the final presentation. Overall, this year in DI taught me how to expect the unexpected and how to work with people on a huge project.

Idea Generation Chart:

The idea generation chart was one of a our very first steps in DI. In this chart we had to create ideas for what we should include in our challenge. Due to me not being very scientific, I did some research on special effects we could use or possible microwords that could be replicated. In class my team and I then discussed what ideas we would like to expand upon in the final project. One thing I think I did amazing on in this part of the project was creating many ideas that didn’t just contribute to one part of the challenge. However, when looking back on my ideas, I wishes I discuss some of them more with my team since I feel some could of made our final performance more interesting. Overall, this was a great start for DI in order to make us think deeply about the future.

Creating the script:

Writing the perfect script took many tries and many drafts. I was responsible for writing most of lines in the script however, it was really a group effort and their had been plenty of times where people edited my script or gave me ideas on what to write. We went through many drafts and often changes had to made due to us not having time to create the props or unexpected events occurring. Additionally, when writing these scripts in class I often found myself struggling since I couldn’t think over the noise. If I were to write the final script again I would try for it to have a clear exposition, rising action, climax, falling action and conclusions. This is due to me noticing how by my last drafts my story may not include these. However, I feel like some parts of the script has very good dialogue that I am very proud that I created than line. Overall, I think this project has really helped me develop my writing skills.

Creating the props:

The props took a lot of teamwork and planning in order to create. Most of our props ended up being made out of cardboard due to how cheap it is and how much we had. Additionally, one of the hardest props that we made, the mysterious object, took a great deal of props. Our group had to discuss and think long about how we will present the mysterious object to the appraisers. We eventually decided upon a painted box like object that include hydraulics and when you push them up, you see little cardboard pieces painted with glow in the dark paint. If I were going to do this part of the project again, I would make sure to try to help more in the props since I feel as if I didn’t contribute enough in that part of the project.

Instant Challenges:

My group often had some difficulties with the Instant Challenges in my opinion. I think this is due to use not being as creative as we had the potential to be. Additionally, I feel as if I didn’t contribute my fullest in these challenges. If I were going to do these challenges again I would defiantly try to come up with more ideas for what we could do in a challenge. However, I think we did a good job at executing our plan for a instant challenge most of the time. Overall, I hope I can do better at instant challenges next year.

Dress Rehearsals

The dress rehearsal were very stressful part of DI. Our very first dress rehearsal was only me and Zach who were available to come at the time. The next we were at least all their however, we still hadn’t memorize all our lines. The next dress rehearsal we had was more put together and while sometimes people forgot their lines we did a good job at most of our performance in my opinion. The final dress rehearsal went better than expected and showed the teachers that we were ready for the final presentation. If I were going to do the dress rehearsal again I would try to deliver my lines with more emotions and used more hand gestures. However, I think I did very well on memorizing all my lines. Overall, the dress rehearsal prepared us well for the final presentation.

Final Presentation:

The final presentation went better than my original expectations for the showcase of all our hard work. We were able to get all our props at the locations and costumes before the our time to present started. Everything went to plan with a few technical errors. During the last half of our presentation our backdrop started to fall which wasn’t the best. Additionally, we weren’t able to turn off the lights thus we had to pretend our lights were gone and this in turn made our visual effect plus mysterious object less visible. However, I am proud of how everyone memorized their lines and were in the spot they were suppose to be for a certain scene. Overall, I am looking forward to seeing the result of our challenge this weekend.

Conclusion:

This project has taught me how to bring out my creativity and expand upon it. This project has also taught me the importance of planning since a lot can and will go wrong. DI this year was defiantly an improvement for me in the final product and teamwork. Even though I am not fully happy with the final result, I can say with confidence that I think I did at least good this year. Overall, DI has made me a more creative and careful person.
