Yacht Metalworks, a small marine welding/fabricating, in business in N. Van. for over 35 years, is looking for a part-time Welding Shop Assistant. Our shop is located on the grounds of The Creek Marina, not far from Lonsdale Quay.

We are looking for someone who would like to consider becoming a professional welder through an apprenticeship program.

 

Requirements: No work experience required, but an ability to safely use and work around power tools, machinery and heavy equipment is required.

Applicants must be willing and able to be trained on the job to work safely around the many hazards present in a metal fabrication shop.

 

This is a physically demanding job and requires the ability to:

• Lift up to 25 kg
• Stand for long periods of time
• Safely use many types of hand and power tools, including, but not limited to:

• • saws, grinders and drills
  • pneumatic ironworker machine
  • metal bending and shearing equipment
  • forklifts, hoists, and overhard crane
  • Communicate effectively with customers, suppliers and coworkers

Use of CSA approved personal protective equipment such as protective footwear and appropriate clothing (to be supplied by the employee), respirator masks, and eye and hearing protection is required.

Duties:  Since this is a very small (but very busy) shop with only two full-time workers (including the owner/operator) the duties of all employees are many and varied. This list below is just a sampling of potential duties:

• Shop and yard cleanup
• Material handling (metal sheets, bars, tubes etc.)
• Drilling, cutting and shearing metal to the required size and shape
• Shipping and receiving

Hours: Flexible. Let us know when you are available after school, on weekends, and during the summer.

Wages: Negotiable

We are looking for individuals that are independent minded and interested in providing Escape Adventures with their best effort.  This looks different for each student hired as it will be dependent on their age, maturity and level of experience.  They need to be able to ride a bike with confidence on trails from gravel to highly technical.  This means we have some Coaches that ride the beginner and intermediate trails and others that ride the more advance trails.  We need both types of Coaches.

We hire Gr 8s as volunteers and ask that they commit to 2 weeks of the 2020 season (March Break to end of October).  Gr 9s and older are hired as paid Coaches.  Typical pay is minimum wage – $13.85 until end of May; $14.60 for the rest of 2020.

Operation: This IS You! Saving Lives at Sea FREE Event for Girls & Women

Royal Canadian Marine Search & Rescue (RCMSAR) partners with Achieve Anything Foundation to offer a hands-on taste of marine search and rescue in Coastal BC

Vancouver, BC – January 8, 2020 – The Achieve Anything Foundation announces that applications are open for an exciting new Operation: This IS You! hands-on experience event to be held with RCMSAR in White Rock, B.C. Saturday February 22. www.achievanything.ca

Participants will get a first-hand look into the rewarding work of marine SAR – hands-on! Activities include on the water and shoreside searches, rescues, man overboard, first aid scenarios, SAR equipment/gear use, dewatering stations and more! The event is completely free to attend and is open to women and girls age 14 and up.

The event is by invitation only and applications must be made in advance on the Foundation’s website. Those selected and invited must further complete the RSVP process by the specified deadlines in order to be admitted to the event. While there is no maximum age for women to apply, all applicants should self-assess they are sufficiently mobile/agile to board vessels and participate in the day’s activities.

Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue (RCMSAR) is a charitable, volunteer-based organization that operates 33 marine rescue stations on the B.C. Coast and Interior. From Vancouver’s busy harbour to the remote waters of the North Coast, volunteer crews are on call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, ready to respond to marine emergencies. RCMSAR is a key part of the marine search and rescue system and works within one of the most challenging search and rescue regions in the world. RCMSAR volunteers conduct, on average, 800 marine rescues every year, approximately 1/3 of all marine emergencies. Volunteers stand ready to leave their jobs and their families on a moment’s notice to help people in trouble on the water – even in the worst possible weather. RCMSAR crews are highly trained and equipped with specialized rescue vessels designed for the challenges of the West Coast.

The Achieve Anything Foundation is a federally incorporated not-for-profit with a mission to inspire female future leaders from shop floor to top floor in high-tech STEM fields, where women are drastically under-represented. The Foundation offers incredible, hands-on experience events in the native environments of agency and industry partners under a program called Operation: This IS You!. Foundation events, projects and programs are always free to participants to prevent barriers to participation. The Foundation also spearheads the signature annual The Sky’s No Limit – Girls Fly Too! event which is the world’s largest gender diversity outreach event of its kind in Aviation, Aerospace, Marine and Defence. This completely free international event is open to everyone regardless of age, gender or citizenship. It’s held annually in early October in honour of International Day of the Girl, a Canadian-driven UN Observance.

Ocean Wise is proud to be launching our YouthToSea Spring and Summer Leadership Programs in 2020. For those of you involved in youth volunteering in the past, this program is our AquaCamps Work Experience program, but amped up to offer more development/opportunity.

These programs are designed to offer youth (14-18) an opportunity to build their personal leadership, problem-solving and life skills. Youth in the program will volunteer in our AquaCamps at the Vancouver Aquarium during our Spring or Summer sessions working with children. Youth volunteers will expand their social network, increase their marine conservation knowledge, connect with their community and gain employment skills.

Students who complete the Leadership Program will receive:

• 120+ hours of volunteer service
• Ocean Wise Animal Handling Certification
• WHMIS Certification
• CAN Autism Training
• Ocean Wise Leadership Program Certificate of Completion
• Opportunity to join member-only workshops/events at the Vancouver Aquarium
• Valuable work experience and professional contacts

There is also an opportunity to complete an original ocean conservation service project of their choosing with an Ocean Wise mentor as well as access to the YouthToSea Microgrants – where students can apply for grants to fund their ocean service ideas! Youth who complete the program will be invited to the Showcase event in October 2020 – which is a weekend of outdoor learning including camp activities, water activities, presentations, networking opportunities and fun & games of course! The program is fully funded, there is no cost to the students to participate – all offsite training and certifications are included.

If you’re interested by cannot commit to the full placement, we will still have a few part-time positions available which have a much lower hour commitment.

Returning Aquarium volunteers will be given first opportunity to sign up for the program in Spring and Summer. Parkgate Society has started a new after school program for Cove Cliff youth in grades 5-7. “School’s Out” will feature swimming at Ron Andrews, arts and crafts, sports, cooking, ice skating, laser tag, complimentary snacks and bus pass, and much more!

Volunteering With Older Adults:

1. Tuesdays or Thursdays between 10am-4pm: Help our seniors with dementia to do fun activities in My Parkgate BREAK

2. Wednesdays, between 11am-3pm: Help our seniors with dementia to do fun activities in My Parkgate Mini BREAK.

(Parkgate Society is starting a new one day a week dementia program to accommodate the people on the waiting list for My Parkgate Break. This mini program is a scaled-down version of our My Parkgate BREAK program and will feature lunch, social time, and brain/body fitness.)

3. Tuesdays, February 4, 18, March 3, 17, 11-2:30: Help a senior with their shopping. Parkgate Society is starting a new Access Bus to help isolated seniors get out and shop. Private bus transportation provided.

4. Various days: Volunteer drivers to help people without vehicles get to their Parkgate programs (through NSCR Better at Home)
