For the past six months, we have been preparing to compete in the Destination Imagination BC Provincial Challenge 2022. To learn what DI is and more about what we accomplished, read my previous DI blog post. Click here to read. This post will be a reflection on the entire experience, as well as an explanation of what we have accomplished since my last post. Remember to check out my team members’ blogs: Sydney, Gwenyth, Frankie, and Andrew.
Preparations:
After the last post, we printed out festival, goal, and fork in the road cards and completed lots of full run throughs of our challenge. We also printed out more extensive research papers on our chosen festivals. After doing extensive practice, we thought of roles that suited us and practiced using them in our skits. We also did lots of instant challenge practice.
At the Challenge:
When we arrived at the challenge, we decorated our car for a car photo shoot. We then took our boxes to the challenge and waited for our time. When it was time for our challenge we were called in. Our selected festival was the Floriade Flower Festival, our goal was “find the missing keys”, and our fork in the road choice was “choose the perfect jellybean”. Our skit went really well and the appraisers even laughed at a few of my jokes. This is a video of us completing our challenge:
After the challenge the appraisers gave us sticky notes about our challenge. These are what they gave us:
We then completed our instant challenge which we can’t disclose any details about at this time. What I can say is that it went well and my team was happy with what we did. Here are some additional photos of us at the challenge:
Score:
For the main challenge, we came second. For the instant challenge, we came first.
Strengths and Weaknesses:
Throughout DI, I was good at coming up with stories quickly on the spot. This would prove useful in our challenge. I was also good at doing improv. I always listened to my team, built of their ideas, and pushed the plot forward. I was also very thorough when completing research papers on our festivals. I will continue to work on my ability to accept and build on the ideas of my team members. I will also work on my ability to work around scheduling issues with my team members.
Reflection:
I think that for my first time doing DI, it went really well. My team created a great skit that followed all the challenge rules. My team worked really well together and the appraisers liked our skit. When I do DI next year, I will hope it goes as well as it did this year or better.
